Shortly after Buffalo WKBW 7 News I-Team Chief Investigator, Charlie Specht, and his colleague, Jeff Wick, reported Father Jeffrey Nowak in 2019 for sexually harassing a seminarian, I published “Addressing the Present-Day Culture of Sexual Predation and Cover-Ups in U.S. Seminaries.” Copies of this report, which made mention of Nowak’s behavior and Bishop Richard Malone’s cover-up, were sent to every U.S. Bishop, seminary rector, vocation director, safe environment coordinator, as well as Knights of Columbus (KOC) leadership and KOC Councils throughout the United States. Although Nowak was removed from ministry, he was never laicized, but continued to be paid, fed, and comfortably housed by the Buffalo Diocese until Wednesday, 8 July 2026, when FBI agents raided his residence while he was in the act of masturbating while watching child pornography. The Latin maxim pro bono Ecclesiae ("for the good of the Church") was originally a high moral standard to protect the Church's spiritual mission. Tragically, history shows it was weaponised by church leadership to build a global architecture of systemic cover-ups.
ReplyDeletePrior to the Second Vatican Council, this concept was deeply corrupted into an administrative pretext to hide sexual abuse and other clerical crimes. Conspicuously, while Vatican II overhauled almost every facet of Catholic governance, this specific dictum was seemingly the only operational philosophy the Council Fathers failed to reform. As a result, the toxic policy of prioritising institutional image over justice bled directly into the modern era.
Under the guise of "avoiding scandal" and "protecting the good name of the Church," bishops routinely shielded predators, weaponised canonical secrecy, and silenced victims. The turning point in exposing this pathology occurred when Pope Benedict XVI became the only pontiff to explicitly trace the cover-up crisis to this exact pretext, condemning a "misplaced concern for the reputation of the Church" that derailed criminal justice.
Ultimately, deploying pro bono Ecclesiae to conceal horrific crimes achieves the exact opposite of its meaning. It violates the Vatican II definition of the Church as the "People of God" by sacrificing vulnerable souls for institutional survival. Stripped of its theological veneer, this misuse ceases to be a defence of the faith; it is a mechanism of self-preservation for a corrupt hierarchy—benefiting the very individuals who perpetrate and enable evil.
The bottom line is clear: no dictum—whether civil or ecclesiastical—can ever be treated as an absolute. When a maxim is unmoored from objective morality, it inevitably mutates into an instrument for tyranny and institutional overreach. To prevent this, every legal and spiritual principle must be rigorously qualified by, and subordinated to, the immutable demands of justice.
Consider the classic axiom: "Justice without mercy is cruelty." While philosophically sound, its modern inversion is catastrophic. When church governance prioritizes cheap mercy for the perpetrator at the expense of true justice, it inflicts a secondary, systemic cruelty upon the victim.
This brings us to the latest ecclesial trend: the "synodal church." Far from fostering authentic communion, this framework has been effectively weaponized by a hierarchy practiced in the art of self-preservation. Under the guise of dialogue and administrative novelty, synodality is routinely deployed to mask ongoing cover-ups, dilute objective truth, and dismantle the historic moral traditions handed down from the Apostles.

DeleteSpeaking of justice delayed/justice denied…whatever happened to the case of Fr Luis Camacho? After much info at the end of 2025, even if mostly bungled, we were told Fr Luis was going to exercise his final appeal. That was more than half a year ago. A status update would help us to know this issue is not being swept under the carpet!
