He leaves the impression of a glib, flippant and an airhead personality. He cheapens what Tim Rohr is trying to achieve on this blog, and I hope he knows that comments like his affects the credibility of the venue. Obviously we cannot control what people say on a blogsphere, but due to the gravity of the current situation, none of us can afford disrespectful and shallow remarks even in anonymity. Kindly share comments with substance, and be prudent enough to remain silent when no insights are present. I say this with charity, for we owe truthful and substantive remarks to our readers who are deeply affected by the troublesome events in the Archdiocese. Many are in our shoes, meaning the unfortunate plight of welcoming NCW influences, and they are hungry for answers. Every stipend ...You are SO CORRECT on this, Agnes! Every stipend that is offered to a priest to say Mass for a specific intention (including Animas, En Bida, for the sick, etc.) is to be accepted for that intention only at that particular Mass. There may be dozens of Mass stipends offered by the Faithful to a particular priest daily (judging from Mass intention lists printed in church bulletins and/or announced before Mass starts, maybe upwards of 30-50-100). It was illicit to lump them all into one Mass.

Unless the rules have changed (quite possibly; I don't know), it is illicit for priests to lump many intentions at ONE Mass. So, most he could fulfill is 3-4 stipened-intentions a day (some priests say 3-4 Masses on a Sunday to accommodate the Faithful). So what happens to the other stipend-intentions? The other intentions (and the corresponding stipends) were sent to missionary priests or priests at monasteries, abbeys, seminaries, homes for retired priests, etc. where there are more priests than people giving stipends - and those stipend intentions are then fulfilled. Back then, it was an accepted way of supporting the missions. Back then, the priest could opt to celebrate Mass with the larger stipends ($10, $20, etc.) and send the $1 or $2 stipends off to the missions - along with the specific intentions. (I don't know if people still offer $1-$2 Mass stipends.)

That was then; I don't know what the rules are today. If abused, it can be a lucrative priestly function - especially considering the voluntary upping of the "ante" to $20, $50, $100 (or more if for bishops). The Faithful also give freely and willingly for baptisms, house blessings, car blessings, pet blessings, etc. (confirmations for bishops), weddings, anniversaries, etc. - sometimes called "honorarium". Back then, those are all "pocket money" to the priests. They were not taxed by nor reported to the Chancery, nor were they for parochial needs. Those were personal "bonus".

Of course, the merits of a single Mass is infinite - and can suffice for ALL the intentions of the world! And the priest remembers in his Masses his own and other personal intentions. Remembering at Mass and receiving stipends for requested intentions are two separate things. This is not to denigrate the intrinsic value a single Mass!

Again - I repeat - that was then (prior to Vatican II). I don't know what the rules are today - so I cannot fault priests who do LUMP stipend-intentions into one Mass (if they do)! And I make no judgments, nor say this as a "sour grape". Perhaps it is perfectly ligit today! I'm only relating what I know - like what the off-island priest told Agnes. - jrsa.

J.R.San Agustinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17874835056590971951noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5652940417109665141.post-66654255408222528092015-10-30T21:17:57.014+10:002015-10-30T21:17:57.014+10:00Please read this regarding Mass intentions and gi...Please read this regarding Mass intentions and giving an offering or stipend for a Mass intention.
http://www.thecatholictelegraph.com/special-intention-mass-offerings-covered-by-canon-law/20049
Eileen Benavente-Blas eileenbbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12190641393439863817noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5652940417109665141.post-49305393721497628902015-10-30T19:58:52.507+10:002015-10-30T19:58:52.507+10:00I've also been told by an off-island priest th...I've also been told by an off-island priest that there's only suppose to be one intention per mass. Here on Guam I noticed that churches and priests mention so many intentions before Mass. Imagine my shock when I went to a parish where the lector read intentions thirty minutes before the Mass because the intentions were fifteen (15!) pages long! Really? The stuff that Martin Luther will take a rather bleak view about.

The general church norm is one intention per Mass but supposedly Guam gets away with it because it is considered a mission diocese. What does that really mean, and is the Archdiocese of Agana considered a "mission?" I know that I may be opening the proverbial "Pandora's Box" but we have to face head-on the discrepancies in order to purge and purify our diocese along the path of integrity. Apparently these observances have proliferated during the 30-year reign of Anthony Apuron. He was more concerned about his worldwide travels and other personal concerns than the welfare of his diocese. It was more about taking more and not sharing more. He has amassed vast sums but he has never shared. Parishes get a call from his office when they fail to "pay" him that standard bishop fee from parish fiestas and confirmations in a timely manner. To the point that most priests decided to either give his "obligatory chenchule'" along with the invitation for him to come or hand him an envelope right after the Mass so that they do not get a dreaded call from the Chancery. Despicable process, and I thought those cameo appearances were part of his pastoral work - so why is he getting amounts over his normal monthly salary?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5652940417109665141.post-16508379359478882892015-10-30T17:25:27.116+10:002015-10-30T17:25:27.116+10:00Tickets nearly sold out for my birthday.
