Drama critics, last month we did our reprise of THE FUGITIVE casting our own Fr. Adrian Cristobal in the title role vice Harrison Ford. Escape themes, e.g. Papillon, Steve McQueen 1973; Cool Hand Luke, Paul Newman, 1973; and best of all I Am A Fugitive From A Chain Gang, Paul Muni, 1932; can be compelling.
Midnight Express, Brad Davis, 1977, rereleased on DVD 2008; furnishes the raw material upon which today's escape story will be crafted. When the protagonist of Midnight Express found that his four year sentence in a brutal Turkish prison had been judicially extended to 30 years, he decided that his life depended on his escape. Prison slang for escape was "midnight express;" thus the movie's title.
We apparently have our own Midnight Express for priests who have escaped.
