WHAT HEALING LOOKS LIKE

Dear Archbishop,

Your people do talk. So we understand that Rome is going to give you a chance to fix things. Good. We thought we'd help. We don't want any more "I'm sorry if I offended anybody". The fact is, you did much more than "offend", you broke stuff, you broke people, you trampled on lives, helpless ones. So please, no more "reaching out" sermons written by Larry. We don't want you to reach out. Here's what we want. Here's what healing looks like:

  1. Reinstate Fr. Paul Gofigan as pastor of Santa Barbara Parish.
  2. Publicly apologize to the people of Santa Barbara parish for removing their pastor in violation of canonical procedures.
  3. Publicly apologize for locking him out of his office.
  4. Publicly apologize for stripping him from the schedule of presiders without just cause.
  5. Publicly apologize for threatening him with an "arduous and painful closure to his assignment.
  6. Publicly apologize for inferring that he was in an inappropriate personal relationship with Mr. Joseph Lastimoza.
  7. Publicly apologize for alleging that the had built a stairway to his room at the rectory to facilitate late night rendezvous with Mr. Lastimoza.
  8. Reinstate Msgr. James Benavente as rector of the Cathedral-Basilica.
  9. Publicly apologize to Msgr. James Benavente for publicly maligning him.
  10. Publicly apologize to Msgr. James Benavente for never giving him a copy of the allegations against him or giving him the opportunity to defend himself.
  11. Publicly apologize to the family of Msgr. James Benavente for the grief and hardship they suffered because of his being publicly maligned.
  12. Publicly apologize to the Cathedral-Basilica parishioners for the grief they were made to suffer as their parish was torn apart with public accusations of financial mismanagement.
  13. Publicly retract all allegations of financial mismanagement against Msgr. James Benavente
  14. Offer to restore Msgr. James Benavente to his former position as Director of Catholic Cemeteries. (He may not want it.)
  15. Offer to restore the Archdiocesan Development Group and reinstate Msgr. James Benavente as its director. (He may not want it.)
  16. Publicly clarify the position of Msgr. James Benavente as to whether he is only the rector of the Cathedral-Basilica or if he is in fact the pastor of the Cathedral-Basilica parish.
  17. Publicly apologize to Richard Untalan, Joseph Rivera, Msgr. James Benavente, and Sr. Stephen Torres RSM for dismissing them from the Archdiocesan Finance Council because they would not authorize the conveyance of the title to the former Accion Hotel property to the Redemptoris Mater Seminary.
  18. Personally apologize in writing to Richard Untalan for accusing him of "nonsense".
  19. Order Msgr. David C. Quitugua, the Vicar General, to personally apologize in writing to Richard Untalan for accusing him of a "vulnus" against you.
  20. Publicly apologize to the people of the Archdiocese of Agana for removing the former Accion Hotel property from the patrimony of the Archdiocese of Agana without their knowledge.
  21. Rescind the Deed Restriction which removed the former Accion Hotel property from the patrimony of the Archdiocese of Agana.
  22. Publish the current letter of affiliation between the Redemptoris Mater Seminary and the Lateran University.
  23. Publish a list of the current stable and permanent professors at the Blessed Diego Institute/Redemptoris Mater Seminary, their positions, their credentials, the courses they teach, and their village of residence.
  24. Publish the academic handbook for the Blessed Diego Institute.
  25. Publish complete annual financial statements for the Blessed Diego Institute and the Redemptoris Mater Seminary.
  26. Publicly apologize to the people of the Archdiocese of Agana who for many years contributed to the Redemptoris Mater Seminary under the guise that it offered an authentic and traditional formation for the diocesan priesthood.
  27. Authorize, permit, and sponsor those men who desire to study for the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Agana to attend the regional seminary in Fiji or any of the accredited regional seminaries in the states.
  28. Order Fr. Adrian Cristobal to personally apologize in writing to Aaron Quitugua and his family for the grief he has caused them and for not telling him the truth about the real reason Aaron was not permitted to attend the seminary of his choosing.
  29. Personally offer to sponsor Aaron Quitugua to study for the priesthood for the Archdiocese of Agana at the seminary of his choosing.
  30. Publish complete annual financial statements for the Archdiocese of Agana.
  31. Amend the Archdiocesan Sex Abuse Policy to address the issues of conflict of interest (particularly when the archbishop is named as a perpetrator).
  32. Apologize to the people of the Archdiocese of Agana for incardinating Fr. John Wadeson and subjecting us to a "probable threat", a threat you were evidently aware of since you released him from ministry as soon as his record became public.
  33. Remove yourself from your Neocatechumenal Way community. As bishop, the Neocatechumenal Way is supposed to be subject to you. It cannot be subject to you if you are amongst its membership.

P.S. I'm not going to ask you to apologize to me for going to the Grand Master of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem and attempting to get me kicked out of the order, since I consider such an effort on your part an honor.

P.P.S. You might want to check back and read the comments. I'm sure there will be other recommendations for what REAL healing looks like.

    Dear Archbishop Anthony:
It would also be a great gesture to reinstate Fr Paul as Director of Vocations. He did a wonderful job in inspiring men to their calling, especially in working with the deacon candidates. I have witnessed this first hand. Since his departure many good men have left the formation for diaconate and the ones still in the program are getting a formation less than they deserve in certain specific areas.
Fr Paul is unbiased and caring and all those following their call need a priest like him.

Another important change is to use the advisory boards established to help you in the administration of the Church. In our July 2014 meeting with the Nuncio many NCW priests were opposed to such an idea when it was raised but the Nuncio made it clear that even Pope Francis acknowledges the absolute importance of such bodies.

Lastly, there are many issues with regard to the administration of the sex abuse policy that MUST be resolved. For the safety of our children we must demand that you begin to take this issue seriously.
    In Christ
    Deacon Steve Martinez

  2. Dear Archbishop Anthony Apuron, I trusted you? We prayed for you? I still gave you the benefit of the doubt that you are no one capable of doing such actions. Little by little, day by day as the accusations started to pile up on you I was in shock, in denial to believe everything that was brought against you. The kicker that got me was upon my learning about Fr. John Wadeson' case and you knew about it and did NOTHING but welcomed him into our church (Church cover up) while our public law locks up innocent people (I know of some locals who suffered in this) for a crime that they did not commit. It took me awhile. I needed the prove and the prove emerged and because of Fr. Wadeson, you broke my heart and my trust in you. Jesus said to love the sinner hate the sin and I love you for if it wasn't you, whom shall it be. My He forgive us all. Bring this to PASS, somehow!!! A true man is a man who seeks eye to eye and ask for forgiveness. I know you can do it. Please let us be in peace, I want my Capuchin Priest and other's to remain in our Catholic Church, not no neo..God bless you and bless us too!

I was in the choir during your installation as Archbishop and remember the Responsorial Psalm "Here I am Lord"..You also emphasized these words in your homily that day we all rejoiced and accepted you as our spiritual leader. You have heard your people cry. Have you heard our Lord calling in the night? Will you go to the Lord, in response to the prayers beseeching you to follow his lead. Will you answer his call to hold His people in your heart? You promised during your homily to heal the church during the Holy Mass of Chrism (this Mass is supposed to manifest the unity of the priests and your people with you as their Archbishop). The ball is now on your court to heal this divided church. All items listed above is what your people want in order for the healing to begin,

  7. The rightful, honest, necessary step for the Archbishop to take is to resign. His admission and resignation will be most favorable for him since it's an honorable act. The people of Guam are forgiving. They will remember more this last but honorable act of yours. But even if he does all that is in the list but does not resign, the people of Guam will find it gravely difficult and even impossible to listen and follow, will continue to have ill feelings towards him. Please Archbishop, stop hiding from the light. Freedom is sweetest when it breaks our inordinate love for ourselves in loving surrender to God's mercy and providence.

    Dear Archbishop Apuron.

    peace of the Lord.

Since August 2000 I have been trying to make an appointment to see you that is 15 years ago. As you know I did send you letters which you never answered and phone calls you never returned.

however on your next visit to Manila I'm inviting you to the residence for dinner . I will ask Fr.Efren to accompany you and invite cardinal Tagle and a few priests so no need to worry. I have a staff of four people plus my security so no need to worry.

I would love to visit you on Guam but you know that's not possible. So the best thing I can do in the hope of reconciliation is invite you into my home so I can share with the past years of my life.

I remain sincerely a brother in Christ.

    Fr.Matthew Blockley.

    1. Dear Anonymous 12:38 AM,

I understand how painful it has been with all of the turmoil during the past few years. Losing the original 7 PM choir was another tragic result of last summer's events. How do you replace John, Abby and the other choir members? It is nearly impossible.

As a member of the current (and hopefully temporary) 7 PM choir, I am doing my best to sing prayerfully and serve God through music. I look forward to the day when the divisions are healed and we can be one united church. Until then let's continue to support and encourage each other as we continue our journey of faith.

      Yours in Christ,

  14. Archbishop Apuron, "Your" people are calling out to you. Are you still the Archbishop of this island? We need to hear from "you" and not from those around you. Speak from your heart and not from some scripted page. We are still willing to accept you as our archbishop, however, these 33 demands must be made as a "start" to genuine healing. Not sure if Tim Rohr intended the number 33 as a reflection of Jesus' age but regardless, it is a nice coincidence. Jesus would have done these 33 things and more. Will you?

  16. I had earlier (April 9) written a 4-page letter to the Archbishop, commenting on his plea for "reconciliation and unity" as stated in 2 issues of the Umatuna and in his Mass of Chrism homily, applauding him on his apparent plea for healing, at the same time asking him to make good on his plea (words) by showing that he is willing to in fact "reconcile" (become at one with another), suggesting a very similar list of actions he should do to bolster his words. I had offered a fourfold formula for reconciliation: acknowledgment of one's errors; admission and repentance of those errors; rectification of those errors; and a resolve to cease from doing them. That is why, I guess, the Sacrament of Penance (confession) is now referred as the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Reconciliation is a confession - and without sorrow, repentance, and restitution (if applicable), absolution is negated.

My list of 17 is not as extensive as Tim's 33, but my list is pretty much the same -- and done without the benefit of or consultation with Tim - lest people think I am just echoing Tim. In fact, my letter was dated April 9; and I have cc copied the Papal Nuncio (Archbishop Krebs). I don't have Archbishop Tai-Fai's address to copy him as well.

Do I expect a reply or result of my letter? I am not holding my breath, though I certainly do not consider it an exercise in futility. Each of us must do his/her part in seeking "reconciliation and unity". The Spirit moves whenever/wherever He decides.

In the meantime, let us continue to PRAY. I ended my letter to the Archbishop, and I hope he heeds it: "If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray, and seek My Face, and turn from their wicked ways - then will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin, AND WILL HEAL THEIR LAND."

Anonymous (April 11, 2015 at 8:16 PM), are you certain that AAA "discarded" Fr. Val Rodriguez? It is my understanding that Fr. Val had been allowed to spend time here on Guam by the kindness of his bishop in the Philippines. When I asked him if he was finally here to stay, Fr. Val indicated his time on Guam was temporary since he held several important positions in the Philippines that awaited his return.

    2. True, Mary Lou, but Father Val has a green card.

    3. Fr. Val's bishop is not ours; his bishop in the Philippines allowed him to come to Guam for a few years as a temporary reprieve from his many exhausting responsibilities in the Philippines. In 2013 his bishop called him back to the Philippines because he needed Fr. Val to help lead people back to the Catholic Church in Palawan.

Maybe the archbishop could have done more to keep Fr. Val here, but it wasn't the archbishop's decision to send Fr. Val away in the first place.

In fairness to the decayed anthony I don't think he is responsible for Fr. Val. We must be fair and just . Every bishop has a right to recall a priest to their diocese. Only a serious moral reason should ever prevent a priest from returning to his Incardinated diocese.

    5. Fr. Val has touched the lives of many here on Guam by his genuineness and kindred spirit. His former students at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School speak highly of him and so do the parents. One can sense his dedication to Christ and the priesthood especially when he says mass and inspires the congregation with his homilies.

I'm not so interested in individual priest cases. When I'm interested in is the issues and common threads that run through the life and work of Amthony Apuron. What I do know about visas and green cards is that in the past Archbishop Apuron has issued direct threats to Filipino priest's that if they fail to support his agenda they will be terminated with no support for visa. This is obviously unacceptable of him to issue such threats. But sadly it is the reality of how this Moran ran his entire life.

  30. Dr. Rivera's treatment was disgusting. I know he was serving at the Cathedral even before I became a parishioner. I understand that the day Msgr. moved out of the Cathedral they changed the locks to his office, confiscated his things and searched the rest as he was leaving. This is how the Neo thank people for years of service. This is how goons treat people. This is all while David Q. sat and ate breakfast in the building. When asked he did not know that they changed the locks and he "did not authorize that." Wow! I hear his key did not even work. LOL

Mike Jucutan and Seminarians went through his office looking for "financial documents." This is the real seminarian training. No wonder why we have incidences like Luis at the beach. Mike J. receiving all of his instruction via text message. David had no clue this was going on under his newly assigned watch. How is that for mismanagement! So if David did not give the instructions where did the instructions come from?

Hint - you did not find anything because there was nothing. These people made miracles happen every day. This is why the Neo administration at the Cathedral can't seem to make it work. They still don't get it. So because they could not find anything they had to make up. Lies - lies - lies. Even sadder, they are still trying to convince themselves that they are doing right. Just sad.
