Archbishop Martin Krebs
Apostolic Nuncio to Guam and Oceania

January 5, 2015

Your Excellency Archbishop Martin Krebs,

My name is Lester Gonzales. I am a parishioner of the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica. For the past 12 years, under the leadership of Monsignor James Benavente, I served as an Altar Server Mass Coordinator and Master Of Ceremonies for Liturgical Events.

My wife and I were part of the Neocatechumenal Way. We have heard stories previously to when we became members.  We were told that it had created a division in the Church.  We were told that Archbishop Apuron favored the Neo.  We also heard stories of families separating and marriages failing because they are not in agreement with the Neo ways.

Unfortunately for us, we endured a traumatic experience in our life, the loss of our first born son. Because of that we became a target as a newcomer to the Neo. We were told that the Neo can be a tool to help enhance our faith and give us a better understanding of why God chose to recruit our baby as one of his angels.

However, after overcoming our having been momentarily blinded by what we were taught, we came to the realization that there were several things about the Neo that were not being handled properly. Therefore, after two years, we decided to leave our community.

There were several reasons why we left.

First, the NCW Catechists are not in line with church liturgy.  We were manipulated to believe that it was okay to consume the body of Christ together as one.  We had to wait until every person received the Body of Christ before we could consume it.  At the time, it did not dawn on me how liturgically inappropriate it was to do so in that fashion. The NCW Catechists told us that the Pope approved of this.

Second, instead of increasing my Catholic faith, it felt more like I was made to be a member of a cult. In year two, I was delegated to become the acting responsible for my community.  The Catechist informed me that I had to be very involved, which included the preparations of the celebrations as well as the additional meetings and gatherings that I had to make time for.

The required amount of time that we had to commit really hurt my marriage.  The commitment my wife and I had to give took a huge toll on us and we were arguing and fighting almost every day due to the fact of my involvement with the group.

Being a NCW Responsible meant we had to keep our community as a whole and make certain that our numbers do not diminish.  We were fifty members when we were born as a community.  Some brothers would eventually leave the community little at a time and that would mean more work to fulfill.

My wife and I had just had our second son and we were tasked to be in attendance for all of the celebrations of the Word and Eucharist because some members were not available. When we had our convivence (retreat) if the trash bag (collection) does not collect enough for the bill, we were left to find ways to pay for it.

With our already existing financial struggles, another is added.  The only advice provided by the Catechists is that God will provide for us. For two years, I have lived with that phrase as if I expect God to throw money at me miraculously. This was another burden we had to add to our lives that just made it worse.

Third, they led us to believe that whatever life throws at you, it is your cross to carry. Therefore, whatever situation we may encounter such as the fighting between my spouse and I, the catechists says simply to have courage and to accept it because that is what God has blessed you to have or that it is God's plan for us.

Currently, Archbishop Apuron has created many angry Catholics on this island but he will not see that it is his fault.  To him, it is what God has placed in his life to face- to carry that cross.

Fourth, the catechists instill in you that you are in the NCW for your salvation. The catechist preached to us that Salvation is found only in the Neocatechumenal Way. No one is important in your life but God. To put it short, if you want to go to heaven, save yourself by being obedient in the Way. If your other family members don’t walk the Way, they may or will not be saved.

The term "family" is not as important as what you need to be for God.  Being in the NCW is an easy ticket to heaven.  Your purpose in life is to be involved in the NCW.  Throw away all your luxuries and just be obedient.  Actually, we never got further along because if we did, what we hear is that you give all your luxuries and what they do with it is a question.

Fifth, there are a huge amount of hypocrites that roam about and are very much involved in the NCW.  They seem to have the mentality that they can commit sin anytime because there will always be the celebrations of the Word and Eucharist to be forgiven. They assume that attending these celebrations are given to allow you to cleanse your soul.

We know people who have been walking in the NCW and still manage to do, think and speak judgments of others.  If you have been walking for more than 10 years, one should be able to refrain from making too many judgments.  As for committing sins, some of them still do harm and then echo it during the celebrations to be forgiven.  It has become a safe net for them.

Sixth, they expect you to be loyal.  Since we left, we have been ignored and shunned by most members.  We attend mass every Sunday.  Actually, even while walking in the NCW, we made it a point to attend both Saturday evening Neo Eucharist and Sunday mass.  But because we are no longer involved, despite the fact that we do attend Sunday regular mass, to them, we have been taken by the devil.  And so, our brothers pray for our return because we are apparently lost and confused.

Lastly, they pressure you to have your baby baptized on EASTER Vigil.  Our son was one of those who had to wait to be baptized. At that time he was already 6 months old. I do not normally believe in waiting that long for a baptism but we couldn't say no either.  You just feel pressured and so we decided to proceed with that schedule.  In addition, we were told that since Archbishop Apuron was to preside at the celebration it was a better way to get our son baptized and receive the blessing.

Easter Vigil started at 10 in the evening until 4-5am the next day.  Fortunately, we have very supportive family who attended the dreadful long hours.  Our families have not been accustomed to the Way but they did not complain because they love us. Yet, as I mentioned earlier, that love should not matter because you are destined to save yourself in the NCW according to the catechist.

Months passed and my wife brought it to my attention that we have not received our son's baptismal certificate.  Therefore, I inquired with the chancery and when I did, I was told that they have no documents of a baptism held on Easter Vigil.  The event happened at the Bishop Baumgartner gymnasium in the village of Sinajana.  Because it was in Sinajana, St Jude Parish would be the rightful place to obtain the certificate but they did not have any baptismal documents.

I called the Chancery and they informed me that it should be at the Cathedral Basilica Pastoral Center and so I requested it from the staff there as well. Just like St Jude parish there is no documentation of the baptism. I spoke to Monsignor James Benavente of the situation and asked for his help. I explained to him and he was shocked that they would lie to me about the baptismal information. He advised me to talk to someone at the chancery but I did not get any help.

Before the baptism, we were told that everything will be taken care of. We signed the paperwork for the baptism and submitted sponsorship forms just like the normal procedure as though being baptized in church.  Yet we were faced to scramble between two villages in hopes that one could provide us with our son's baptismal certificate.

Since neither church could provide one, the Chancery finally created one to acknowledge the event. You will find attached a copy of the document, in which it states that he was baptized at the Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica. My son was not baptized at the Cathedral - Basilica. Now, my wife and I are questioning if this document is really legitimate and if our son will encounter problems when he starts school or even when he obtains the sacraments.

To sum it all up, the NCW is just an organization that will manipulate quite the weak minded.  We started with a mission to increase our faith and just left worse than we started and possibly made it difficult for our son as he gets older.

Your Excellency, my wife and I are grateful that you returned. I speak for many of us Catholics here in this diocese. We are frustrated how Archbishop Apuron is not leading us but rather misleading us. Please help us, we have suffered way too long and all we want is a Shepherd to guide and lead us.

God’s Blessings,

Lester Gonzales

  2. Thank you, Lester for sharing your story. As an outsider looking in, I always saw the Way as a "cult", but I couldn't quite put my finger on the "why". As I was reading this, I couldn't help but realize that the Neo Way takes basic Christian values, but distorts in such an extreme way - so I can see how someone who is struggling with their faith can be easily manipulated.

As frustrated, disgusted, and angry as I am with the Archbishop, after reading this, my heart bleeds for him. I can only imagine what issues he may be dealing with to be so weak in spirit that he can't see right through this - and quite personally, I think he does see the wrong that he's done, but may be in too deep and can't see the way out. Regardless, it is more evident that he is not capable of being the spiritual leader of this church.

Tonight, as I ask the Lord to forgive me for my shortsightedness, I will also pray that the Archbishop is given the strength and courage he needs to do what is right.

  3. ScrewTape: WORMWOOOOOOOD!

    Wormwood: Yes uncle.

ScrewTape: Quickly, gather your fallen siblings Vanitakus, Decipma and Chaustis, for the hour has been given and it is close, unbeknownst to those faithful ones of our Enemy! Our conspirators in Babylon, the 'Red' mentiors who has acquiesced to the temporal enticements has brazenly exposed themselves with much pride and without shame, pitted against the man of Petre our enemy.

Wormwood: Uncle this is fascinating news! Likewise we’ve made progress here with the Collars who have chosen the strange new Theology from the charmer of Spain. The poor dwellers of Ladrones have forgotten the little tryst and is quite forgiving of the inequities of the men, the lover of our brother Lucifer, those in black wolves skin.

ScrewTape: Yes, that may be so Wormwood but do not discount another old man also from Spain, our enemy SanVitores. Stifle the vicar who is charged to create another saint for he is already weak in faith and in body. Little is known of the Awful Horror of which NTAViEA spoke of, it is near, quite near and not one man from Petre’s line has uttered a word of this climax. Your brothers, the great Liar, the great Deceiver and the great Chaos is with you, elicit every ounce of effort from them and destroy the families of this Christian land of SanVitores and the children of that great Woman of Revelation. With subtlety continue to confound the faithful with the new corrupt theology the consecrated ones preach, for they know not what they speak of and a third of the stars will fall!

Wormwood: With pleasure Uncle, with great pleasure!

  5. i imagine that it must be extremely difficult to break out of a cult environment. pope francis's admonition to the ncw last year shows how globally prevalent and overwhelmingly strong the neocat psychological pressure must be. and here lester provides yet another concrete example of that. thanks be to God that he and his family have been able to leave.

the bigger picture and takeaway here is this question: why has guam been susceptible to the neocat 'sales pitch'? why have so many Catholics on a supposedly Catholic island fallen for this? what i see is this: guam's Catholicism had become lukewarm and merely cultural. it therefore became ripe for the harvesting by cults and evangelical denominations. we need to reverse this trend. guam needs a true Catholic renewal, and it needed it 30 years ago. start with our own families, then bring it to our parishes!

    2. The greatest deceit is that which is from the inside, remember that the enemy is a very cunning adversary. I agree that the church most especially in Guam has been complacent in their faith placing much trust that the church leaders will not led them astray. Our Church leaders however took advantage of the faithful for their self serving interest, AAA and local church leaders rather than sustaining the Faith has caused a division in the church. Perhaps they should recall our Lords admonition, "Whoever cause one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone hung around his neck and to be thrown into the depths of the sea." (Matt 18:6)

  6. Tim, as I stated in a previous post, records of baptism are kept both at the parish and at the Chancery Office. Certificates can be made from either location. As a former Sacristan of the Agana Cathedral Basilica, I also volunteered many hours at the chancery office from 1986-1989 (prior to leaving the island for military service). Sometimes records get lost in the parish, since the chancery office keeps copies on file, the authorities at the Chancery can create an official certificate from the information they have on file. I myself have created certificates for the Chancellor or Vicar General to sign. They have records going back 300 years. May the blessing of God, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit continue to be with you all in rectifying this illness that has divided the Catholic Church in Guam.

I recieved my confirmation in Asan many years ago. When I needed to get a copy of it, they didn't have records of it, and neither did the chancery. Come to find out Asan was missing 8years of records!!! luckily, the priest was able to remember after being presented with the pictures!

    2. Yes, the chancery can make copies, but only of what has been already submitted by the parish. In this case, the chancery actually issued the certificate of baptism and did it in the name of the Agana Cathedral. In other words, they made it up.

A week or so later he was quoted saying the same thing in the "Umatuna Si Yuus" Catholic newspaper. Many of us were shaking our heads because there was no follow-up. He didn't make any effort to reconcile with anyone or heal any of the hurts he caused. So why did he bother saying it???

When I told him they have a separate celebration of the mass, immediately, without hesitation, he said that is wrong. How, those in the Neo can't see this as wrong, I can't understand. As you stated, when you were still with the Neo, you made sure you went to church even after attending your Saturday evening Neo Eucharist. Even then, you knew in your heart there was something amiss with that situation. May God bless you and your family.

  19. I'm really getting frustrated at catholics, neo or otherwise, who say that dead people become angels. I don't mean to trivialize the death of your child Lestor, but he didn't become an angel, he became a prayer warrior for your family. Read revelation about the prayers of the saints.

    3. @ 12:04pm, yes, what is wrong with becoming an angel instead of becoming a prayer warrior. Your angel prays for you too. Yes, prayer warrior might be more scriptural, but if one says angel, should that really get your frustrated. I like the intent to educate us but you could have been nicer. And Jose M is right, do comment on the wonderful letter of Lester whether you agree on it or not. The prayer warrior and angel fully noted.

  23. I could only glean from the the Kuam report last evening that the Archbishop preached understanding and was urging all to come together. Archbishop your message is ingenious since you have never responded to letters from Greg Perez of CCOG that have been personally delivered to your office. For healing to take place. The two parties must begin dialogue to address their difference. If you truly mean what you preached then you should begin by providing responses to several letters CCOG that have not been answered. The Easter Season is the perfect time to extend an invitation to meet with Greg Perez, to begin the dialogue that can hopefully bring peace and understanding to the Flock. Show your sincerity and humility and agree to begin a dialogue to meet with Mr. Perez. Extending the Blessings of this Easter Season to you.

    1. I believe you meant "disingenuous". But aside from that we shouldn't limit dialogue to the CCOG. AAA needs to begin with a pubic apology to Fr. Paul and Msgr. James and to their families. He then needs to make restitution for the harm caused. But that's just the beginning. No worries though, AAA won't do any of it. He'll do what he always does: make a general apology and then play the victim.

  24. It appears from the context of Lester’s letter that it is not Lester who is referring to his deceased child as an “angel”, but that this is what he was told by the Neos.

However, even if Lester is using the term angel himself to describe his child, we don’t know the intent behind the usage, and I’m not going to ask him.

“Angel” is often used as a term of endearment, especially when speaking of innocent children. And it is also used sometimes to describe someone who is particularly helpful or watchful.

So there is no harm in using the word “angel.”

However, in actual terms, an “angel” is a purely spiritual being created by God to serve him in specific ways. In fact, “angel” is not really the name of the being, it is the name of an office (messenger).

So when we die in a state of grace and finally enter heaven we don’t become angels, we become saints.

In the case of a baptized child who dies before he or she reaches the age of reason, the Church teaches that the soul of the child is immediately received into heaven and is counted among the saints.

If the child is not baptized and dies before the age of reason (a reason to baptize your child asap), the Church teaches that we can’t know what becomes of the soul of the child but we can rely on God’s mercy.

Beyond these facts, this little discussion highlights our central problem: most of us don’t take personal responsibility for learning what our church actually teaches…which is one of the reasons the neo’s have had such success. Get yourself a Catechism and look things up. That’s all I have ever done.

One final note. We can hardly be blamed for many of these misconceptions about life after death. At most funerals, the priest in his sermon often leaves the impression that Uncle Charlie is in heaven when in fact, Uncle Charlie is probably not in heaven but in purgatory with no one to pray for him because we have all been made to believe he went straight to heaven….which creates an interesting curiosity because of this is the case then there is no need for rosaries or “animas”. So good thing we still do those, just in case.

He needs to give Pius and the rest of the NCW leadership the boot, return the Yona property along with other Neo-controlled properties, apologize to the faithful and the priests and deacons, restore Father Paul and Monsgnor James, give us a real seminary, and work diligently to impart the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Have you heard about the Moratorium?? Pablo! Why did you ask for our land?

    1. Nothing really makes sense unless you understand that everyone answers to Giuseppe Gennarini. Pablo is just a pawn, though a willing one. The letter denying the request for the conveyance of title to the property was addressed to Pablo simply because he is the rector. However, he did not request it. Gennarini did. In fact he did not request it he demanded it. Someday soon I will expose the shouting match that occurred between Gennarini and the archdiocesan legal counsel in Apuron's presence. Apuron dumped his friend and servant of 40 years and sided with Gennarini. That's where all the evil is.

  33. News flash! Your religion IS a cult! All religions are. It's a hypocritical, pedophile- protecting, money hungry tool used to control the weakminded and desperate. Reading this, I thought you were on your path to waking up.

    4. Eva, you need to educate yourself some more before you make another comment here. It looks like you're an atheist anyway so perhaps it's better if you just go on your own merry way and never return.
Anon at 9:15 PM, the same goes for you.

  34. This has nothing to do with I've just read. But god bless you Lester and your family, condulence on the loss of your baby. During the Chrism mass at the Agana Cathedral, I was standing at the back but the confession area. I saw the priest supposedly called boboy by everyone listening to a lady giving confession. I was disturbed cause he was on his cell phone while listening to confession!!!! Was this poor ladies confession going in one ear and out the other?????? I don't attend mass anywhere but St Jude. I feel welcome there at the church and its parish, and it sure feels good. I look forward roads everyday
