Archbishop Michael Jude Byrnes recently removed four clergy members from his advisory team, stating they were insubordinate, defied his leadership and betrayed his trust. CONTINUED

    Clifton banned the ncw from church property and instructed their catechists not to operate the diocese. ncw response was to tell the Clifton communities they had to obey God not man. The communities continued to meet outside church property and the catechists carried on regardless!

      It slipped my mind that “the four” are not bishops, therefore, Abp. Byrnes may have the power to defrock them. As I type this, I’m recalling Abp. Apuron’s decision to exercise his power and defrocked the former Fr. Ray Cepeda some years ago, presumably and ironically, over child abuse by clergy.

    3. Rose, laicizing a priest implicates all the due process rights of canon law, including an appeal to Rome.

      With regard to Fr. Ray Cepeda, even if the forum of the first instance provides an automatic review, the strength of the evidence and the acquiescence of the perpetrator might render it somewhat pro forma.

      On the other hand, the NCW Cult presbyters should be expected to vigorously contest their proposed involuntary laicization.

      One might imagine that Fr. Adrian Cristobal was paying particular attention to this subject matter in Ottawa.

      It could be insightfully appropriate in so many ways if he were appointed to represent his fellow NCW Cultists in their proceedings, before having to face his own.

      CNMI, thank you for your thoughts. I don’t know the details of the former Fr. Ray’s laicization, but in one of my reads on this subject from some time ago, I had the sense there was an element of acquiescence on Fr. Ray’s part which was probably why the process was not a long drawn out battle, and could even have been pro forma (or, perhaps there was a back room deal). I tend to agree with you that the opposite can fairly be expected of any laicization of NCW-formed clergy. Having heard no official word on the outcome of his studies, we are under the presumption that No Balls Adrian did well in the completion of his cannon law studies and can be eligible to represent fellow NCW Cultists if things came to that situation. There are many comments here in JungleWatch that he wasn’t the brightest bulb in the chandelier and not the most earnest of students, therefore, undeserving of the privilege of a cannon law education courtesy of the archdiocese. Presuming that he did complete his studies, like you, I would like to see his skill in action representing his fellow NCW Cultists.

    This event is very refreshing is many ways. Kudos to the swift response (strong rebuke, if you ask me) of Abp. Byrnes to this sub-ordinative move by these four members of his clergy. The process by which Abp. Byrnes handled this situation --- (1) direct discussions with the clergy involved, followed by (2) memorializing those discussions in his letter to them --- is the proper course. With this clear statement, there is no confusion about those clergy’s removal from the council: "Specifically, by writing directly to his Eminence Fernando Cardinal Filoni on June 27, 2017, instead of properly directing your concerns to me, you have defied my leadership and betrayed my trust." To add, by writing directly to Filioni Baloney, “the Four” are cowards. In an administrative setting, when there is a grievance, first, take the grievance(s) to the source of the aggravation to give the aggravator an opportunity to correct the situation. In this case, they should have taken up their issue(s) with Abp. Byrnes. Instead, they directly sought cover from Filoni Baloney. Cowards. This formula is also spelled out in the Matthew 18: “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church.” “The Four” were too cowardly to even do step one. Another refreshing point is that there was no back room or hush-hush attempts to quell this rebuke from the public “all the in name of ‘unity’” (an apt phrase used by one of the Anonymous commenters in recent days). The Archdiocese handled with class the fine balance between specifically identifying the issue of the Four’s termination [that June letter to the Filioni Baloney], yet declining to comment on the specifics. Kudos to the Archdiocese! and refreshing! --- for the figurative fresh air and sunlight brought on by Abp. Byrnes’ response to subordination.

  11. It takes “a man” to do a man’s job, not to mention lots of guts, fortitude and tenacity. And you did it, Archbishop Byrnes! Kudos is a mild term for doing what you did. We hope this is the beginning of the end for the NCW in our archdiocese.

    We have seen through these JW comments in the past few months admonitions and warnings that unless the NCW is totally removed from our archdiocese, its roots will come back to haunt you, and us. Their June crying-wolf-letter even after your mandate to them to “cease and desist” (no more communities; tow the Church line in the celebration of Holy Mass) was a true slap in the face to your person and your authority.

    We pray for you in the wake of what the Red Pope will do to you in retaliation for firing those four renegades. Stay firm in your action, and do not cave in to the powers that the NCW wields even in the Vatican.. God bless you.

      I agree. Pray of Abp. Byrnes. Period. Our clergy always need our prayers for God's grace to help them do their work. They can't do their work all on their accord and our accord. They need that outpouring of grace that only God can give. There are a string of days when I find that I pray more for Abp. Byrnes and the Archdiocese of Agana than for my own archbishop and my archdiocese, not out of favoritism but because the greater need for prayers and grace because of all the challenges faced by the Archdiocese of Agana. I don't doubt the coming of better days ahead, but the immediate years to come require tough trudging through the muck and the mess including the occasional slings that come from left field such as the letter by "the four" to Filoni Baloney. Abp. Byrnes and the local clergy need all the prayers they can get to lead the local church onto the better days ahead. Pray. Pray. Pray.

Not only are they cowards but totally assinine in whining to Filoni. Archbishop Byrnes has been gracious in trying to accommodate differences and sensible in trying to find solutions in an extremely toxic situation. Yet these prideful ingrates stab him in the back, bypass his authority, in the hopes of getting a positive response from a "higher" authority. Wow, the height of arrogance and betrayal!

  20. Byrnes can revoke faculties for all of these traitors and have them declared persona non grata while their laicizations are pending.

    He has more than enough canonical and civil dirt on all of them, but he won't exercise his episcopal authority or enforce his previous sanctions against the NCW. Until he grows a spine, he's just a useless figurehead and the Archdiocese remains in peril.

  22. Get it through your heads: Byrnes didn't "fire" any of the traitors. He just removed them from Archdiocesan councils. None of them were suspended from public ministry or laicized as they should have been. All of them still have intact priestly faculties and they are free to continue working in their subversive NCW ways.
