YOU ARE CORRECT

I received the following:
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "HOW APPROPRIATE!":
Tim, I was at the meeting of Pastors, Parochial Administrators, Rectors of Churches and Women Religious Representatives on Sept. 3, 2014 at 10:00 am. Atty Jacqueline Terlaje indeed gave a Preliminary Financial Review of the Cemetery and Cathedral-Basilica. But, I don't remember anybody standing up and saying about Msgr. James' absence and much more stopping Atty Jackie's report.
First, I want to thank you for the professional way you approached this. You are correct. The question about why this information was being presented by a particular person was not done publicly, but privately. I relied on a source for the incident that is normally reliable, so I didn't double check in this particular instance. Normally I do. I just learned this a few hours ago. The post has been taken down and will be amended.

What I have verified though, and perhaps you can verify also, is that at the joint meeting with the Presbyteral Council and the College of Consultors, there was a general question by those present as to why this information about Msgr. James was being presented to them and what it was that they were supposed to do about it. I was told that there was no answer.

If that is not a correct account, please correct it. For the real issue here still seems to remain: What is the purpose of reporting this information about the Cemeteries and the Cathedral? And what does the Archbishop want the respective councils, pastors and religious to do about it?

And then there's still the big one: Why hasn't Monsignor James himself been given a chance to respond to the allegations that are now being made to everyone else? In fact, why has he not even been given a list of the charges in writing?

Thank you for your help.

  3. almost 50% of Archdiocese Annual Appeal in Newark (neo town) NJ goes to Catholic Elem education. How much of our Annual appeal goes to elem ed and Catholic Social Services and hospital services? see: following Newark statement

Statement of James Goodness, Vice Chancellor and Director of Communications of the Archdiocese of Newark

...The purpose of the Annual Appeal is to support the work of the Church in addressing pressing human needs, both spiritual and material.

In recent years, the faithful of the Archdiocese have donated between $10 and $11 million annually to the Appeal. That money has been donated to educate children, help Catholic Charities reach out to the poor, provide programs and support for youth, bring faith programs to young adults in our colleges and to adults in parishes, train men for the priesthood, and care for elderly retired priests.

Ninety percent of the money collected goes to fund programs and ministries.

More than 50 percent of what people give to the Annual Appeal goes solely to support struggling schools and parishes. The rest is directed to other ministry programs.

Over the past five or so years, the schools of the Archdiocese have needed between $13 and $15 million annually to make up for the shortfall between what it costs to run schools and what they generate from tuition and their own fundraising.

Through a combination of Appeal funds and direct Archdiocesan and parish subsidies, we have in most cases been able to meet that shortfall to keep schools open. The lion’s share of this financial support – close to $12 million annually -- has gone to the elementary schools.

Some 64 of the 70 elementary schools of the Archdiocese needed significant financial support during this current year, often in amounts reaching into several hundred thousand dollars, which has come from the AAA.

In addition, the Archdiocese provides a gift of almost $3 million annually to Catholic Charities to help them operate homeless shelters, transitional housing, AIDS ministries, programs for people with cognitive, psychological or physical challenges, job training programs, adoption programs, immigration and legal services programs, elder care and elder housing programs, and programs for people facing economic emergencies.

Another $1 million annually is shared among parishes who reach their donation goals. These funds are especially helpful to struggling parishes...

...Similarly, over more than a decade, the Archdiocese of Newark provided direct financial support of some $32 million to the Catholic hospitals of Cathedral Healthcare Systems to meet the shortfalls between expenses and revenues. These hospitals traditionally serve the neediest.

In regard to the Archdiocesan Schools
It should be noted that the Archdiocese of Newark and its parishes have long supported Catholic schools even as the number of children attending has continued to decline in recent decades. In 1999, for example, some 56,000 students attended the elementary and high schools of the Archdiocese; in 2013, only 32,000 attended. Yet in recent years, Catholic school financial support has reached almost $15 million annually. Over the past decade, that financial support has totaled $145 million.

Such strong Archdiocesan financial support, however, has not been sufficient to stem closures or consolidations; primarily because single concerted efforts like Lighting the Way had not been undertaken. Today, a majority of Archdiocesan elementary schools require financial support to meet the shortfall between operational expenses and revenue from the traditional sources of tuition, fundraising and donations.

  4. Thank you Tim for admitting to a mistake. This is why your Blog is highly respected and trusted. But the crucial question remains: why is this archbishop, with the lead taken by a neo attorney and the archbishop's Responsible in the Second Community of Agana, convening meetings with the clergy and religious to malign Monsignor James? This is just downright bad. Is this what the Pope told you to do archbishop, as you practically accosted the Pope while the Pope was getting into his car, and that is, to continue your vengeful, mean, and vicious ways against Monsignor James? Our archbishop not only fires Monsignor James, does not state any grounds for the firing, but goes around and spreads malicious allegations behind Monsignor James' back. Is this the kind of actions that you, archbishop, said the Pope endorses? You are a mean man archbishop. Be a Christian and do the right thing: ask Fr. Paul and Monsignor James to forgive you, and then resign.

    1. Fire first then let the witch go on a witch hunt to justify the firings. Throwing stones when you have a glass house will only hurt you more. Archbishop, your actions are hurting your faithful non neo Catholics.. If you wish to continue to throw stones, you are throwing it at 144,500 non neo Catholics. We see your aggression and we will throw back at your glass house.

  6. So when will the report be released for Monsignor James and others to review. I think qualified professionals should be able to review the report. More importantly, why should we belief the report has credibility.? ..who did the financial report? Just because you are an attorney doesn't mean you are qualified to do a financial statement....AAA make this information public....make the financial statements of the RMS public...it is a requirement of all nonprofits.....

  7. When will the Archdiocese release the financial statement of how the funds collected from charities appeal and other fund raising are spent? Are the neo parishes required to give % of their collection to AAA for RMS/neo activities? Why don't the communities turn in the money for recoding....all non profits are required to report all income collected?

  8. So your spy "snitch" must be one that was present at the meeting.... that is where all the internal issues become external and shows up on a blog somewhere. I wonder if its a priest. I guess we can't trust him with our confession, he might make it slip out of his mouth. Or it might be a religious sister. Or a deacon also might be called a dakon

    1. You're a fool if you think there's just one. You are also a fool to think we have no right to know what the Archbishop does to our church and our priests.

    2. What's with all this secrecy? The only thing that should be kept confidential is the confession to the priest. These so called meetings amongst the clergy should be revealed to the congregation, so no secrecy should be allowed. Keeping secrets only adds to assumptions and speculation, and silence doesn't help either. Transparency is a key to "building" trust within the Church.
