MAKING MASS A PLAYTHING

  1. I'm unsure how the cited article in the GIRM suggests that concelebration shouldn't be the norm when there are multiple priests present. Perhaps a little more elaboration on the comment: "Concelebrations are not to be done willy-nilly". In fact, the overall sentiment of Sacrosanctum Concilium, from which the GIRM is derived, was one oriented away from the so-called "private masses" (I know this pertains to the congregation [or lack thereof], but it was duly unheard of to have two priests celebrating one mass prior to the council). All things considered, Msgr. Quitugua is the pastor of the Cathedral parish, and therefore, has a "canonical right" to be present and responsible for all liturgies at the parish. Obviously, I'm not in agreement with the lay testimonies during Holy Mass, but we should be careful about the way we approach particulars, and in this case, the worthiness of concelebration when there are multiple priests present.

    1. It is interesting that you claim Msgr. Quitugua to be the “pastor”, when in fact his not being the “pastor” was the reason AAA felt he could quickly dismiss Msgr. James without regard to canonical prescripts for the removal of pastors. Pastors have certain rights, rectors do not. If Msgr. David is now suddenly the pastor then Msgr. James must be restored to his position of “pastor” - since he was removed without regard to said prescripts.

Both the GIRM and Canon Law permit concelebration when there are multiple priests present - especially since they are not simply permitted to sit with the congregation (as AAA himself did not long ago - sitting with his community) - however, there were not “multiple priests present”. Msgr. David was there NOT to be “present and responsible” for the liturgy, but to be present and responsible to be sure that the Neo’s had their time. This was obvious to all, and another example of the abuse both of respect for certain law and the people. In fact, given the ulterior motive for his presence at the Mass, perhaps even the Mass itself was abused. But that would comport with the Neo MO, for which everything is their plaything and the GIRM is only “a book of suggestions”. Those are their words - and in fact, Msgr. David was the one credited (by the Dianas) for such an interpretation.

  1. Someone should tell Anonymous at 8:13am that those assigned to the Cathedral-Basilica are rectors and the bishop is the pastor...... people need to educate themselves before they make comments

Thanks for the clarification! I'm not all that caught up on the current issues surrounding the clergy at the cathedral but certainly your blog is the place to begin. Blessings!

However, he can't really be faulted for being wrong. The position of rector at the Cathedral is really at question. Rector's are not permitted to perform the duties of a pastor, yet Msgr. James was required to perform those duties for 20 years, making him the de facto pastor. The archbishop is the "pastor" of the diocese and cannot be the pastor of an individual parish, yet, in addition to being the seat of the diocese, the Cathedral is also a parish and requires a pastor or at least an administrator.

Just another example of how messed up the administration of this diocese is. No one seems to know what they're doing, but they are very good at planning their next off-island junket.

    2. Have you written a dedicated post to the related canons concerning rectors? If you could post the link that would be great. I was always under the impression that the title "rector," was essentially honorific when concerning "head priests" at cathedrals. I know in my own diocese, the rector of our cathedral is essentially the pastor with all the rights and responsibilities. Regardless, thanks for all the info.

As for "Anon 8:14AM" -- you're right. I probably should have looked into the history and relevant canons prior to making a post. I have a personal interest in the well-being of the Church on Guam and a less-than-novice understanding of the inter-workings of the Church. Blessings!

  2. These "joy" talks will soon be felt by ALL parishes. The Archdiocesan Appeal will start around the beginning of Lent and Deacon Claros will bring the RMS Seminarians into our churches for witness talks for the whole weekend of scheduled Masses. I guess this is for the faithful to see how their appeal dollars are being put to good use. So far I saw that Mangilao Church is scheduled in May. Tamuning and Agana Heights are already scheduled as well, but I don't recall the exact dates.

I hope my pastor will give us the final blessing and then allow the RMS talk. Lord help me if that is not possible. I will pray about what action to take because I will either do one of the following: Get up and leave or stand with my back turned like what the NYPD did to Mayor de Blasio. Wouldn't it be nice if we were brave enough to stand together and sing Atan Jesukristo or a Marian song to drown out that talk? (my wishful thinking)

Brace yourselves people...there is a talk coming to your very parish! It is a message and wake-up call that we can't hide away from the abomination anymore.

    1. In addition to the talks, the archbishop is scheduled for a pastoral visit in the village of Agat where he will also visit the sick and shut-ins later this month. He's ramping up his PR for Rome to see his "good works" . Desperate times call for desperate measures. I don't recall any such visit by AAA in previous years so I'm looking at this as one of his attempts to save his throne.

  3. I am sitting in the front and I will just take out my iPhone where it will be plainly seen and record. My Appeal has already been decided on. It may not be much, but my check will be given to two charities interchanging every month until the end of the year. One will go to the Friary and the other is a secret.

  4. When they showed the video last year for the Annual Appeal, people walked out. Like 12:12 stated, Deacon Larry wants to start early this year. Seriously? You want us to give AGAIN to a seminary that does NOT belong to the people of Guam? Since the hill is so proud to boast that the RMS is a fruit of the Neocatechumenal Way, then let the NEOS pay for it! Leave us alone! We want real priests, not those judgmental ranting products of Kiko! We want to send our local men to REAL seminaries! They deserve that and so do the Catholic faithful of Guam!

    1. I watch the Vemio verson and loved Father Luis Camacho's comment.....thank you all for donating, it provided us food, others necessities and airconditioning. These things got me thru....I too like to have other necessities and airconditioning 24/7 but my budget just can't afford it. Since money and material things are not important, have the local RMS boys have their parents sell their land, jewelry, cars to help support! For the others have their parents give a dowry to help support them. Snufalaphagous says enough is enough.

  6. How's about a trade. Give the news the Yona property in exchange for Apuron's resignation along with the three amigos, their neo deacons, and a restraining order to stay out of our parishes and 100 yards from any other real property belonging to the archdiocese.

  7. It may be a lost cause but why would we even consider giving and not fighting for it. AAA, if he has the power to change this course and give the Yona RMS Property back to the Archdiocese of Agana, this is the correct action to take. Yes, he can't because he really is not in charge. That is our greatest challenge because he just doesn't have control of this Diocese anymore. The outsiders do.

NEO Puppet strings from all around the world pulls AAA left, right, up, down, AND UPSIDE DOWN!

    1. If I understand how the former hotel Accion was acquired, the good people at Bank of Guam saw how the archdiocese can benefit from acquiring it and facilitated it's acquisition. I don't think they had any idea that AAA had plans to turn it into a NCW controlled property. Hmmm... if BOG sold it to the archdiocese of Agana then It's not Apuron's property to do as he pleases.

    2. You are correct, it is NOT Apuron's property to do as he pleases, but it is not because of Bank of Guam, but because of both church law and civil law. Guam law treats a corporate sole as a trustee. The trustee is not permitted free reign over the trust.

  9. Attended 11:30 mass at Agana Basilica presided over by NCW monsignor & boring priest.
Across the way were seated NCW members who didn't seem happy to be there. Noticed they had stern or bored looks on their faces & folded their arms across their chests during the prayers. I think I saw 2 men (possibly S. American) also who may have been NCW seminarians. They kept their arms/hands behind their backs during the prayers. After the monsignor gave his homily, he had a NCW, Mr. Camacho give testimony about his marriage, etc. I knew what this so-called "invitation to joy" was all about. Hated how they used the venue to try to recruit devout regular Catholics to join their NCW ranks! Looked around the congregation & observed some people who may have been NCW supporters. Others were just regular Catholics like me. They seemed surprised or "disgusted" that this was happening at this mass. After Mass, one of the 2 NCW men was stationed by the side door to hand out invitations. Told him, "NO, thank you!" Should have said more. Felt sick that I had to witness the deceptions at this mass.
