KIKO ARGUELLO AND HIS NEOCATECHUMENAL SONGS: PLAGIARISM?

Posted by LaPaz, Jungle Watch Correspondent from Spain.

This post is a translation of one published in Cruxsancta signed by VERITAS. Maybe it moves away from all the Guam catholic Church problematic, but I consider very important to give a translation of it because Jungle Watch is an absolute reference for those who are worried about the Neocatechumenal Way around the world. For sure this post will be consulted by all English speakers from Europe and anywhere.

It is well known that Kiko Argüello is such a modern renacentist man. He touches near all human creativity fields: painting, architecture, design, music, writting...And all touched by him become gold.

Kiko Argüello is shown with the devotion of a living saint by his people. Neocatechumenals truly are fanatics of him. All of them think he is directly assisted by Holy Spirit and he is the new prophet for a new catholic Church era. Once I hear there are people looking for a little peace of whatever thrown from Kiko in a meeting to preserve it as a relic. Terrible.

This post will focus only in his songs, collected in the "Resucitó Chants" for neocatechumenal psalmists. In the Way is not possible to introduce a song not musicaly arranged by Kiko. He is the only ans supreme compositor. Each song is accompanied by a catechesis also made in Kiko. That is the way the founder decides what, when, why and how to sing.
There are some songs that neocatechumenals use to sing that have become popular out of the Way. Even those ones are heard in several catholic Church celebrations as if they were part of traditional catholic liturgic acerb. For example: Resucitó (Resurrected) or Hacia ti, morada santa (I do not know how do you call it in English, translated is "To you, holy habitation") are two very famous. Excuse my lack of knowledge in those chants in English version.

Here is an adapted summary of the written by Veritas in Cruxsancta:

"Just over a year ago I had a conversation with a friend in a social network. We talked about the CNC (both are former members, he was more than 20 years in a community, I was born in a neocatechumenal family and I walked more than 10 years in a community).

The conversation advanced to the music in general, Kiko's songs in particular, and then my friend told me that many Kiko's songs from "Resucitó" were taken from typical Jewish songs and others are by a rabbi whose name I will remember later.

The list given by my friend has twenty of those songs, here we go to see how Kiko loves whatever related to Jewish and then he copies it. Kiko took the idea of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, who gathered his people to have long catechesis before singing their songs.

Here there are some of the songs, first the link to Kiko song and second the link to the original Jewish songs".

  2. Lapaz, here there is another example of how kiko takes texts from te judaic tradition and adapts them to his own songs. Sometimes, the most of them actually, his traductions are no correct at all.

The page is written in spanish. It talks about the song "Se encontraron dos ángeles" (I don't know how to traduce it).

    1. Dear Alejada, thank you for your commentary, your English is quite good! I am sure there most of Kiko's songs are just a simple copy if we attend to how he uses to do everything in his life.

    3. Interesting what is said in that link, where a person asks a rabbi about Kiko's song "Two angels", without mentioning Kiko, of course. That person supposedly sent that rabbi the lyrics that neocatechumenals sing, which say one angel asked another one "where is God's Glory?", and this one answered "God's Glory is in blessing". By Kiko's catechesis, you will find God in every blessing thing, act or word.

Well, about those lyrics (Kiko and the Way) the rabbi says literally: "Assume that the glory of the Lord comes down to a "blessing" is reducing God to an object, the dimension of an idol; which represents a grave offense against the Lord of lords". http://serjudio.com/rap2401a2450/rap2402.htm

These words said by a rabbi make me think maybe Kiko has been telling neocatechumenals and friends of the Way a partial understanding of what he says the jewish say. Maybe all his catechesis supposedly based on jew's understanding are not ortodox at all. So, he will be missunderstanding dangerously catholic and jewish traditions and telling both of them mistaken teachings.

Sometimes what appears to be a simple song can lead astray and sin; therefore, it is prudent to recognize who come chants ...

  3. I listened to a few of the Kiko's songs and compared them to the Jewish version, and YES, Kiko's MELODIES appear NOT TO BE ORIGINAL!
