This truly is a NEO Cult Newspaper. This ArchNEO Cult Presbyter is so biased and full of himself that he refuses to step aside to allow the process to be fully investigated. Instead he remains in the forefront as the approver of the impending outcome "which will ultimately be his WAY (LoL).
Let's be clear about one thing: THERE WILL BE NO INVESTIGATION. Just as there was no investigation of Luis Camacho, etc. There will be no investigation because the policy is deliberately flawed. All authority in the policy is given to the bishop. He can pick and choose what he wants to do. Unfortunately the U.S. bishops have written in the same exemption for themselves. All of the polices are a sham because they all protect the bishop. There will also be no civil investigation unless the statute of limitations is lifted. We will now see for ourselves the courage of our current senators. BJ has already abdicated now that we have a real victim.
Yet this begs the question: what is the policy among the Conference of Pacific Bishops (CEPAC) of whom Agana is a part? The Archdiocese of Agana is only on observer status with the USCCB. Should we not alert the President of CEPAC regarding this grave matter? Or is it of no consequence? We know brother tony relished the presidency of CEPAC at one time but wanted none of the responsibility. In fact he derided the Conference as backward so he would rather go to the USCCB meetings in DC. The other bishops would then wonder, "why is he here?" We know the answer to that one: an excuse to travel.
I guess the "proper steps" which this diocese took to "contain" this sexual abuse was to thrash the victim and his family rather than to contact the victim and offer compassion and prayers. One would think that there has to be a cardinal or someone higher than brother tony in Rome. Who does brother tony report to or is he directly under the pope? If he's directly under the pope than guam is really unique and it's no wonder why brother tony and his neo handlers wouldn't want to voluntarily give up his position and power.
A bishop is accountable to no one other than the faithful of his diocese. Therein lies the problem. We do not yet have enough who are willing to hold him accountable so he does what he wants. The pope has very little authority over a bishop when it comes to administrative matters.
This is why he says "no one can get me." He believes the Laity will never come out in numbers to depose him. Let's stop talking about his need to "step down." He must be deposed.
This "blame the victim" tactic is setting a dangerous precedent not only in our society but to the world. Is the Church reneging on its commitment to zero tolerance when the accused is a high ranking clergy? Is law enforcement soft and slow to action when it involves a bishop? Are the appropriate agencies safeguarding the protection of sex abuse sirvivors? Folks, this is an exercise unfolding in front of us: young people are not blind to what is going on. How this extraordinary scenario plays itself out will be a test of whether we adults "say what we mean, and mean what we say." Also, I find it unconscionable that the Archdiocese is using resources that are best allocated towards the spiritual upliftment of the people, not in the defense of a priest in 1977 who may or may not have molested a young boy in his care. We cannot imagine any Governor of Guam utilizing government resources in his defense should he be accused of a similar scenario in his past, so why should we tolerate an archbishop who not only accuses a survivor of lying but also mobilizes his team to attack the accuser? Not to mention, that he is a man of the cloth, and thus held up to a higher standard.
We get what we permit. Apuron believes that aside from a few, no one will oppose or depose him. Thus the question "held to a higher standard by who?" No one has held him to a higher standard ever. He has done what he wanted to do and been very in your face about it because no one dared question him.
A few other notes. There is no church wide zero tolerance policy. Each bishop can set his own policy and do as he wishes - unless the faithful demand that he do something else. Again, the problem.
And law enforcement is not a factor in this as the statute of limitations is expired. Only our legislature can do something about that, but we seem to have the same deference to them as we do to Apuron.
In short: if it's to be it's up to me. Just not enough "me's"
PEOPLE...AWAKE FROM YOUR SLUMBER!!! I've been an advocate of "you want something done, do it yourself." This archbishop has been towing ALL OF US around for over 30 years. As Tim states,WE are the ones who can make the changes necessary. Rome will not.......let me be clear.....ROME WILL NOT COME TO OUR RESCUE. If the people of our island Catholic faith will not all stand together against this series of atrocities, then we've lost. I for one, will remain steadfast in keeping this to the forefront. So........what say you, Catholic people of Guam?
