    2. Maybe that's why John Toves' cousin hasn't come forward.

    3. Way more than that. If each of the 32 Guam victims so far sues for $5 million, that's $160 million, plus legal fees.

Then there's the first abuse case on Saipan against the retired bishop. Lujan is also handling that one. He'll be the big winner. If he wins all 33 of these cases, he could rake in well over $50 million.

    4. Yes, Anonymous 9:05 AM, that is a lot of money.

      Here is different perspective:

The church decides to pay victims in advance (a la carte menu):
      $5,000 for basic molestation
      $10,000 for oral sex
      $25,000 for rape

      How much would you charge?

    5. No anon at 8.52 this is not the reason

    6. 9:58 the victims would be crazy to accept that kind of chump change. Given all they suffer, I hope each one of them gets $5 million.

    7. Here is the problem 9:58. You said the "church" decides. No. Bad apples in a barrel do not represent the Church. Apuron is not the Church. Until we start differentiating Apuron from our Church, we will end up throwing the baby out with the bath water. And SNAP and all the other virulent anti-Catholic organizations will be laughing at us for watching us Catholics destroy our own Church. Sad and tragic indeed. Our Blessed Mother is truly crying for Guam.

Anonymous 7:26 AM & 8:17 AM, I guess you missed the sarcasm in the comment made by Andrew Camacho at 9:58 AM.

I'm also guessing you're relatively new to this blog. So you may be unaware that Mr. Camacho is the Vice-President of the Concerned Catholics of Guam and has an impressive record of supporting the cause of the victims/survivors of child sexual abuse/assault by Guam's clergy verbally and in writing. One of Mr. Camacho's more serious pieces was drafting the CCOG Seven-Point Plan to Address Child Sexual Abuse which was submitted to the Archdiocese and supported by the PDN in its editorial titled OUR VIEW: Church officials should adopt plan to address child sex abuse which you can read here http://www.guampdn.com/story/opinion/editorials/2016/11/17/our-view-church-officials-should-adopt-plan-address-child-sex-abuse/94011980/

    9. My apologies for trying to make light of the situation. It is difficult to use humor in the face of abuse and suffering.

      What I should have said:

Yes, that is a lot of money. But can anyone put a price on the horror these young people went through at the hands of the clergy? How about the years of suffering they endured? Is any amount sufficient? How do you restore innocence to a child? How do you make up for the violation of trust from a "man of God"?

There is no answer. All we can do is pray and work for justice in whatever form that may take.

    10. Andrew Camacho needs to stop his very offensive joking about this horrible situation. There is absolutely nothing humorous about it.

There is no amount of money that can compensate.
Money can always be worked for to bring back lost items. Unfortunately the lost time of a victim spent in suffering and anxiety years of life lost can never be returned. Lost time caused by men like the disgraced bishop camacho can never be brought back. so even five million USD is really nothing. Trauma can never be removed.
I only hope the people will see what an evil sick man he really was.And I hope David Lujan will get him in the American Jury system and he will be made to answer. Absoloute horrible man.

    1. Wake up 5:44 and face reality for a change!

Among many other things, money can pay for comfortable early retirement from stressful jobs, mortgages, education of children and the psychotherapy victims will need for the rest of their lives. Pie in the sky shit does nothing for anyone.

Lawyers are scum and I'll always hate them for what they did to me as a defenseless child of a brutal Catholic divorce. However, I wish Lujan every success in these horrific cases.

    2. Those who think like 5:44 may need a dose of reality. Perhaps oblivious to legal wranglings that declared open season on US$5 million windfall per allegation. The primary issue must be the injustice of "derelection of duty" meted out by the Church, the accountability of leaders who covered up abuses, and a reasonable compensation to the alleged victims, enough to help them through counseling and not a lucrative opportunity to live off an injustice. I trust the integrity of the accusers but I am starting to question the ridiculous compensation entailed. The Church failed them miserably, yes, but as a Catholic who supports the mission of the Church I want the Church to learn but to also continue its noble mission. Bankrupting the Church is a knee-jerk vengeful response that I cannot condone. We have to go beyond callous revenge into building up a stronger foundation and put safeguards for the future Church peopled by our children and their children. This statement may not be politically-correct in the emotionally-laden atmosphere but I believe in maintaining a balanced perspective. We have to be part of the solution that allows healing, not cripple a once-lame church to which we belong into oblivion.

  3. 10:32 is soft on pedophiles. He might be one himself.

In addition to that, he knows nothing about the ravages of PTSD suffered by the victims. There's something seriously wrong with someone who sympathizes with the Church in this catastrophe.

    1. It depends what you mean by "the Church." For now, all the bad actors are dead or gone, leaving only the people in the pews to pay the bills. The priests and bishops don't pay the bills.

    2. It should be obvious that I'm referring to the institutional Church, archdiocese included.

There are enough living perverts on Guam to make Lujan an uber-rich folk hero. In addition, deceased, laicized and pedophile priests otherwise in absentia have been successfully sued by their victims.

    3. What is "the institutional church" when it comes to paying the bills? Who else is going to pay them but the people in the pews. Only a few scoundrels like Apuron have a great amount of personal wealth, but its only a few cents now relative to the amount of the suits and he has probably already found a way to give that to the NCW.
