  4. Yes, Tim... all is well, you wouldn't expect humble servants of the Almighty to not give thanks on the occasion of Sister Marian's birthday, right?

  7. This definitely shows the real culture of Guam. Everyone gathers together around food to eat (and even sharing of food) no matter what is happening in their lives. It is the one unity within the disunity. After eating it's back to the business and disunity. Till it's time to eat again. I decided in 2002 it's because of the typhoons. The wind can blow everything way and all you have left is each other. It's a bit like now with a typhoon in the church. Everything they have known can go.

  8. I think it's okay. Deacon Larry is my uncle and I disagree with everything he stands for but will still show respect to him and eat with him at family functions.

  9. people gotta eat at some point, i suppose.

but turning to another arroyo ... i just heard fr mike's interview with patti arroyo (the one from tuesday morning, 9/27). he's very diplomatic with regard to hon. but the part i hope fr mike would reconsider is deferring too much authority to filoni over the archdiocese of agaña.

filoni might have authority over a few specific things, but the authority over the archdiocese rests with the archbishop. the archbishop doesn't answer to filoni, most especially when it comes to administering the archdiocese. the troubling situation right now, of course, is that the current archdiocesan administrator also happens to be filoni's second-in-command. in other kinds of organizations, that would be looked at as an obvious power-grab.

but even in this situation, to recognize filoni's authority where he really doesn't have the authority is to welcome the wolf. even though we know hon is just following filoni's directives, the fact is that hon is the authority in the diocese at the moment. so question hon, resist hon's unjust mandates, stand up to hon's lack of good leadership. but all the while, also make sure filoni gets the message that you don't answer to filoni.

most troubling about this is that filoni's congregation will be in charge of nominating apuron's successor. and as tim has explained, this is why the possible candidates were being tainted (gofigan, benavente, and now crisostomo).

the island faithful is up against centuries-old vatican power-mongering. but it doesn't mean it can't be defeated. keep up the fight!

    1. It means a few people got together which is what Guam does. It's culture. I find it amazing but I have seen it happen often. Show respect. Celebrate Sr Marian's birthday. Don't discuss the elephant in the room. They may have been doing it for many years. It's Guam. That has nothing to do with church business my business or anyone else business. You ask any kid about Guam's culture. You get told it's all about respect. We are seeing that here.

    2. The nice thing about seeing this is that it shows they are not being vengeful and hateful towards one another. That shows there is hope they can be together. If push comes to shove with Rome we may all need to put our differences aside and work together for one common cause. Who knows what Filoni may have in mind. I have a feeling he won't stop for anything.

    3. It means that certain people still care about trying to bring people together especially when divided...most priests such as Palé Mike still go out in the community to try to make peace. Sometimes people only see a small piece and not the whole picture...if you go and hear his homily and actually have a conversation with him you will see how genuine Palè Mike really is.

    4. Does it mean that people will compromise principles just so they can get along and get by?

    5. Not sure if it is really about respect or a cultural thing as some have mentioned, but I was born into the Chamorro culture and have lived here all 60+ years of my life, and I respectfully disagree. I am part of a generation of Chamorros who, as children, were told not to listen in on adult conversations, don't question, obey and do what we're told by parents and elders. This was drilled into us as part of having respect. The problem with this, however, is that abusers took advantage of a "Don't ask, don't tell.." familial and social environment. So here we see a social gathering that, for the sake of appearance, seems like all is well at the surface but the tension and problems are swept under the rug for the time being. It's the S.O.S. after they part ways. The result, a full stomach courtesy of those who donate and tithe to the archdiocese. Like government, churches don't make money..they TAKE money from people.

    6. Does it mean that Sister Marian is celebrating because at nearly one hundred grand per year she’s the highest paid employee in the diocese?
Does it mean that Deacon Larry Claros is celebrating because when he was the SARC shredding the Diocesan Sex Abuse policy he achieved lifelong notoriety with his “For sure! For sure!” dismissal of a claim against Apuron? Ans. For sure! For sure!
Does it mean that Fr. Jeff is celebrating reneging on his commitment to allow the ladies to visit the seminary?
Does it mean that Fr. Mike is celebrating “working something out” after the tremendous outpouring of support by the laity?

    7. $100k?! that's unbelievable, especially considering that a few years back, there was some swirl with apuron and how much stipend the hospital chaplain receives, much of which doesn't even come from the archdiocese. remember that?

  12. i was puzzled about the date of this photo since Pale Mike look like he gained weight from last week. source stated it was a combined birthday lunch today for Mother Marian who was elected Mother Superior of Guam Mercy Sisters.

    1. Oh dear. They're eating somewhere fancy. Surely these are people working for the Church, the only thing they should be eating is bread and water. Shame on them for giving into their need for some chow.

      Lord help us all. /sarcasm.

    2. It has nothing to do with eating or even where they're eating. It has to do with a deal. But that's all I can say about it ... For now.

  14. Is everyone at the Chancery treated with a luncheon for their birthdays? or does this apply only to a select few in the management ranks? Father Jeff, are you folks getting paid to celebrate elegant birthday celebrations in nice expensive resturants? Considering that you are all humble servants of the almighty, perhaps a reminder that your time is on the faithful's dime, and in a time of crisis which the archdiocese is still in, it is not prudent that you give the impression that all is business as usual, we normally do not celebrate during a crisis situation. No wonder there is no faith formation coming out of that office, marian and claros are partying more than they are forming faith, but what can we expect from these Neos. Of course, of course, NEO's are only held accountable by their catechist, and Apuron and Pius are not here, for sure for sure, its party time..

  15. Looks like some people have no clue why I posted this. It has nothing to do with a birthday and it has nothing to do with eating. And it has nothing to do with how "genuine" a particular priest might be. But speaking of the "pastoral office" name one thing that has come out of it. Does any one know of any serious ministry to hurting marriages? To the divorced and widowed? To those desirous of adult catechesis? To the aged and home bound? Anything.? Millions have gone into that office.

    1. excellent questions, tim. fr jeff last week kept warning about the loss of "services" if the archdiocese were to be sued and found liable. but what services?? the archdiocese has received a good amount of money to develop and provide services in family ministry, etc. where did the money go?

      Delete
    2. Certainly not to help the people of God. Don't forget the use of the archdiocesan marriage ministry's fundraising efforts "to promote and support marriage." Funds were sucked up into the archdiocesan "black hole" as Claros so coyly put it.

    3. I must say that Helen and Tricia are the workhorse of that department, Claros is just collecting wage for doing nothing, he is not there half the time. Marian, steps in at the last moment to take credit for all the these two hard working ladies do. Like Apuron, she likes the limelight, to be noticed, placed on a pedestal for all to see, no humility at all. Since she has taken on directorship, no faith formation has come out of that office, same goes for claros. Nothing Doing, for Sure For sure. I suppose they were hoping that the NEO take over would be realized, and all faith formation would happen at the community level, by NCW catechist the likes of Eusebio, and Jackie Terlaje..

    3. ANON 6:19...I believe in Unity, however, Unity and Peace can only come one way....(and it isn't through"the WAY") through Justice. Once JUSTICE is laid down, Unity and Peace will thrive. I believe that one day soon, our church on Guam will unify into the One True Catholic Church.

  17. The Archdiocese provides no pastoral services. Archdiocese falsely takes Money from Catholic Extension. Let us not forget this. Tim made couple of posts on this two years ago.
