CATHOLIC PISSING MATCH

Anonymous Coward challenges Chuck White, "Maria", and myself to a Catholic pissing match:
"... in December 8, In every procession I don't see Tim Rohr,Maria and Chuck White and thier family. Nobody says anything that thier less Catholic than anyone. Does it really matter whether you receive the Body of Christ via mouth or hand. Biblically I don't see Christ ever said to the disciple, guys you need to receive it by your mouth. Again LAW,LAW,LAW. If so, point it out.
Dear Anonymous Coward:

Chuck White and I could lay out a list of Catholic credentials and participation in activities that would drown you. We just don't talk about them and neither of us have any interest in being seen, as apparently you do. But at least Chuck and I have the courage to put our names on what we say. Obviously you don't.

P.S. Since you don't know jack about your Catholic faith, here's an FYI. Before allowing communion in the hand in limited circumstances, Pope Paul VI reminds Catholics:

This method of distributing Holy Communion [on the tongue] must be retained, taking the present situation of the Church in the entire world into account, not merely because it has many centuries of tradition behind it, but especially because it expresses the faithful's reverence for the Eucharist.

Further the practice which must be considered traditional ensures, more effectively, that Holy Communion is distributed with the proper respect, decorum and dignity. It removes the danger of profanation of the sacred species, in which "in a unique way, Christ, God and man, is present whole and entire, substantially and continually." Lastly it ensures that diligent carefulness about the fragments of consecrated bread which the Church has always recommended.

The Apostolic See therefore emphatically urges bishops, priests and laity to obey carefully the law which is still valid and which has again been confirmed. It urges them to take account of the judgment given by the majority of Catholic bishops, of the rite now in use in the liturgy, of the common good of the Church.

- Memoriale Domini, the Instruction on the Manner of Administering Holy Communion, The Congregation for Divine Worship on May 29, 1969. This Instruction, prepared at the special mandate of the Supreme Pontiff Paul VI, was duly approved by him, in virtue of apostolic authority, on May 28, 1969. Pope Paul also decreed that it be brought to the attention of the bishops through the presidents of the episcopal conferences. Anything to the contrary notwithstanding. Rome, May 29, 1969. Benno Card. Gut, Prefect.

  1. Go ahead and try to receive communion on the hand at the Vatican and then cite your outrage when they direct you otherwise. Your ego is sure to be bruised.

  2. Better yet, try holding on to the host until everyone has received as the neos do.

    2. Trying very hard not to use the word "jackass". Nowhere in this post do I ASSume that the comment came from a NEO. I only assume it came from a "coward". And "show me in the bible". Really? Are you even Catholic? If not, you're excused. If you are, then you are a jackass. Oops. There, I used it.

    6. 8:41 - Tim is in the Bible...The Book of Timothy. It's not nice to insult, but I must say that 5 year old is more articulate than you. So Anon 8:41, if it's not in the Bible, it doesn't exist? You know, the Bible doesn't mention gasoline cars, so gasoline cars can't exist can they? If you didn't know, the Catholic Church stands on a three-legged stool: TRADITION, BIBLE, and the MAGISTERIUM. ( I learned that from Steve Ray:-) I think you need to refer to your Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The Manner of Receiving g Communion
Recently, Cardinal Antonio Canizares Llovera, prefect for the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, encouraged Catholics to consider receiving holy Communion on the tongue as a “sign of adoration that needs to be recovered.” When we do so, he said, we “know that we are before God himself and that he came to us and that we are undeserving.” To receive the Eucharist on our tongue, he said, is to signify our humility before the Lord and to recognize that it is God himself who feeds us.

For this reason, some Catholics choose to receive the Eucharist not in their hands, but directly on their tongues. Receiving the sacred host on our tongue ensures that we do not treat Christ’s presence as an ordinary piece of bread.

    1. This is a very beautiful explanation. I love the idea of humbling myself before my Lord and Savior. Unfortunately I was instructed at my Catholic grade school (by a Sr no less) that to receive by the tongue was dirty and that the Preist did not want to touch our dirty mouths. Since then I have always received by the hand but maybe this Sunday I will start to receive by the mouh.

    2. I also think receiving the Holy Eucharist on the tongue is very beautiful and more respectful to God. But when I was a young adult convert a young Jesuit in the states told me as a lector and eucharistic minister I should be an example to others and receive the Holy Eucharist in my hand. A few months later he ran off with a young woman...

  5. Tim, my Irish Nana always said that the key to winning pissing matches is Guinness - lots of it. Guinness. And she couldn't have been wrong about this because she was right about everything else..
