PDN: CARDINAL TO INVESTIGATE

Conservative cardinal on Guam to investigate sex abuse claims

VATICAN CITY - The Vatican has sent conservative Cardinal Raymond Burke to the Pacific island of Guam to investigate an important case alleging sexual abuse, dispatching a seasoned jurist who has clashed repeatedly with Pope Francis for a sensitive mission halfway around the world. CONTINUED

  1. wow, just catching up on this now. big news indeed.

of course, the vaticanistas are looking at the church-politics angle, of: why burke, why is he being shipped out to tiny far-away guam, etc. maybe there's some of that going on--who knows, whatever.

no matter how he ended up in this situation, this is an opportunity (read: a test) for cardinal burke to demonstrate how the hierarchy ought to deal with the intersections of clergy and laity, of justice and mercy, of doctrinal and pastoral. but i'm sure his fans and his detractors will find a way to keep the Catholic environment nicely polarized, no matter the outcome of this test.

but, disregarding all of that roman political intrigue stuff, the fact remains that cardinal burke is a highly regarded canon lawyer and once headed the apostolic signatura.

so, for now, i'll give burke the benefit of the doubt as regards this case. i hope he'll truly be impartial (ie, his focus will not be to protect "the Church") and he'll ensure that justice will be brought forth, especially with great compassion toward all the survivors.

    1. Which doubt will you give him the benefit of?

  2. If these Canon Lawyers are here to get deposition from the accusers, and I understand that a canon lawyer representing Apuron is also present, Should we not expect that they will gather witnesses to speak on behalf of Apuron also? I will bet that the cunning NCW leaders lined up people to testify on behalf of their bishop Apuron. What say you???

    2. Dakun Tenorio testified: "I love the archbishop." I was in Agat and saw nothing, heard nothing..he didn't do it." "He's innocent, I tell you."

    3. I understand that an NCW faithful from agat claiming to be an altar server was also present to testify on behalf of Bro. Tony.

Given that we were/are not in the proceedings, I don't think any of us is in the position to say that a witness testified "on behalf of". It's sufficient to say that "so and so testified" (i.e. "Dakun Tenorio testified."). We don't know the content of their testimony and whether a witness' testimony was favorable or hurtful to the Abp. Apuron. What I find interesting are the people who have been summoned to testify. What piece of the puzzle of facts was each witness summoned to testify about? For example, what information does an NCW altar server have that is of value to the Tribunal? Second-hand knowledge, hear-say evidence, and character witnesses are of very limited use to the Tribunal. With that in mind, I'm thinking that this altar server must have to have been summoned to testify over first hand knowledge of an event involving Abp. Apuron and/or his activities.

    5. We know the evil capabilities of the NCW. Apuron is innocent in their eyes. Their cult's continued survival is dependant on Apuron's vindication.

  3. Dakun Tenorio seen leaving Chancery after a tribunal meeting. I wonder if fist pumping Fr OJ was there to coach him?

Funny that the victim isn't allowed to have his lawyer present but the accused had his attorney there. I'm still having a hard time figuring out the logic in coming all the way to Guam but not speaking to the one Apuron victim living here. I guess it only makes sense to the Vatican.

The real question remains. Is this merely a mock trial or is Burke serious in learning the truth? If it's the truth they're after then I hope they also deal with financial issues and mismanagement issues.

Deacon Martinez was there in the morning. I hope he let them have a dose of the realities beyond Apurun 's rape charges.

We'd love to find out but they cannot say anything. Every time they've got something to say some high up in the Church slaps a gag order to hide the truth. Will the Church ever come out of its clandestine shadows?

It is the only way people will start to trust the Church that is so damaged in reputation.
