STOP ADVERTISING IN THE UMATUNA

An anonymous recommendation:

The Umatuna may as well be designated and re-named the “Kiko Fan News.” As THE CATHOLIC newspaper on Guam, our Catholic Congregation’s natural expectations are that it would be wide-range in its coverage of non-neo Parishes, parishioners, youth or Priests. But this is
not so; rather, this Catholic paper has clearly and blatantly flaunted it’s biasness as demonstrated in it’s 3 or 4 consecutive Sunday’s repetitious, blown-up, full-page, front-page RMS promotion and in it’s long-windedness and exaggeratingly redundant coverage of neo-ordinations and neo deaconships compared to our local sons’ ordination to the Priesthood or to our local Capuchin son’s Deaconship celebrations. These were the more blatant and obvious Umatuna-neo-highlighting coverages. Other neo coverages were more subtle in what appears to be Umatuna’s quest, goal and mission of: The proliferation of neo spot-lighting.

I suggest, in demonstration of our objection to and disdane for Umatuna’s neo news proliferation over non-neo Parish level youth, local Pastor, Ministry and Apostolate news by adding the Umatuna along side the AAA in our list to boycott!

I will stand corrected if I'm wrong, but I'm told that Parish Fiesta Ads are paid ads so ...

  1. Full agreement. This weekend's was the last straw for me. Not only were we inundated with three in a row, it was the same author! I don't even think they care to pretend anymore. It was so blatant. There are so many good things happening in our Archdiocese that are not neo-centric, but they have tunnel vision and are one-tracked. Sad.
To Sr. Marian and Mr. Tony Diaz, your'e both smarter than this! Who is really in charge?

  2. Well, it is the Archbishop's paper so this is what he wants the Catholic Faithful to see - the fruits.

It would have been nice to have a write up on Mangilao's Columbian Roses and Squires instead of just a picture, but I guess we can expect these things.

It would be nice to feature all aspects of the Archdiocese but let's not whine about it. Let's keep doing the best we can in spite of the Archbishop's semtiments.

    1. Maybe that is another problem of his,he thinks that it is "his" paper when it really truly should be His paper.
And this is hardly whining. It's exhaustion.

    2. So, the Umatuna is the Archbishop's paper? Is the RSM seminary also the Archbishop's to give away to neos at his discretion?

I suppose, because the Catholic radio station is “also the Archbishop's station” it is why he controls all information broadcasted just as he prohibited the rebroadcast of his incriminating statements about Cardinal Arinze -- well actually, that was only a failed "attempt" cuz apparently Tim has a copy of the radio recording; in fact, Tim is first-hand witness to this attempted coverup!

What else does the Archbishop own in this Catholic Diocese of Guam – the souls of our non-neo clergy, perhaps?

  3. Anonymous (May 19, 2014 at 2:20 PM), in response to your question "Who is really in charge?" please note the Chain of Command at the U Matuna Si Yu'os:

    • PUBLISHER: Most Reverend Anthony Sablan Apuron, O.F.M, Cap., D.D.

    • Executive Director: Sister Marian Arroyo, RSM, Division of Pastoral Ministries

    • Editor: Tony C. Diaz

Sister Marian and Tony Diaz are definitely SMART, but they are also UNDER the one "who is REALLY (my emphasis) in charge" — the One … the Only … Archbishop Anthony Sablan Apuron, who is a MEMBER OF THE NEOCATECHUMENAL WAY!

  4. Yes, it would be nice to read and hear about parish news from Piti, or Yona, or Merizo, or Yigo, or Dededo, or Tamuning, etc., but we won't. It should now be called the Umatuna Si Kiko.

  5. Hello Tamuning and Merizo are kikofied!

    1. Tamnuning? Some of the communities of Tamuning have merged with Agana because of the drop out rate.

    2. They may be kikofied--I mean the pastors---but 99.9% of the parishioners have not been kikofied, and any news about them will be welcomed. Don't give up on the neo parishes. Pastors and bishops come and go, and these neo priests will as well. Why? Because it is becoming quite apparent, at least in Guam, that many of these seminarians are not ready for the priesthood(think Michael, Edwin, Francesco, Fabio, etc.) and many will be sent on missions to faraway places. Courage! When a new bishop replaces Apuron, we pray and hope he cleans up this mess and unites the Catholics in Guam once again

    3. No, Anonymous (May 20, 2014 at 8:46 AM), the pastors of the Tamuning Parish of St. Anthony-St. Victor Catholic Church are not “kikofied.” While SASVCC may have had flourishing NCW communities in the past, several parishioners recently told me that:

      • as reported by Anonymous (May 20, 2014 at 7:13 AM), many members have left the NCW, forcing several communities to merge — I was unaware the merge had been with communities outside the parish;

      • Monsignor Arroyo has been heard to refer to the NCW as “a way,” not “THE Way” — after all, only Jesus Christ is THE Way; and

      • the priests at SASVCC no longer assist with the NCW services — other RMS/Neo presbyters are brought in to serve the needs of the community/communities.

I’m sure the priests at SASVCC were simply doing what the Archbishop told them to do in the early days of the NCW at the parish; they are NOT “kikofied.”

Everytime a group wants to overthrow another, the media is always the first place to go. We see it in Central America when juntas were a dime a dozen, even in the Philippines when someone was always trying to take over the government. One of the most important targets are the radio and TV stations, and the papers. Suppress what you don't like and a whole bushel full of the stuff you want them to believe. I guess kiko got the same training as Che and Fidel...control the media!
I was watching Catholics on the Move on Sunday and saw something very comical. All their shows were quite old now that Fr Paul isn't available to help them out. A note popped up that the next segment was with Tim Rohr. But apparently they had to edit this out, because the Tim segment never came on. A short while later they did let through a segment with Chuck White on saints. Interesting on how far they will go against Tim. I wonder when they will edit out Chuck from old programs?

    1. Catholics On The Move is independent of the Archdiocese and I believe they do not take editorial direction from the Chancery. I also believe that Fr. Paul and Fred Rodriguez, one of the producers of COTM, are good friends.

    2. “jose” is correct — unlike the U Matuna Si Yu’os, which IS under the direction of Archbishop Anthony Sablan Apuron, COTM is not under the direction of the Archbishop and/or the Chancery.

I have watched a number of the old COTM episodes on GuDTV Channel 25 on Sunday evenings and I’ve seen apologetics segments presented by Tim Rohr. Maybe there happened to be a glitch in the playback of the episode that Janet was watching that evening. I seriously doubt that any of the COTM personnel would ever consider editing out Tim Rohr’s informative segments, especially since COTM is the visual off-shoot from the radio program and Tim’s segments explained “Why Do Catholics Do That”?

  7. May i make a suggestion? Submit stories and photographs of what is happening in our schools and parishes. There are so many good things happening that in the Catholic community that aren't Neo-centric. Our organizations are having meetings, fundraisers, doing good things; Get it on Umatuna. Let's take it back. Don't just post on FB!

    1. That is an EXCELLENT suggestion, Anonymous (May 21, 2014 at 10:11 AM), and I hope that people respond to it. I used to work at the U Matuna Si Yu'os back in the 1970s and my editor always welcomed stories from local parishes. I'm sure the current editor would be just as open to filling the pages with local stories.

Our parishes — especially the non-NCW ones — need to be more proactive. I'm sure each parish has people who are really good about documenting events by taking a lot of photos which, as you mentioned, can be submitted to the U Matuna in addition to being posted on Facebook. We see — thanks to the zeal of Ms. Jennifer Dulla — anything and pretty much everything related to the NCW via her articles and photos.

Maybe Tony Diaz can have Ms. Dulla profile the young men who will be leaving for the Capuchin Novitiate the way she profiles RMS seminarians on their road to the priesthood.

    2. Ms. Dulla knows at least one of the Capuchins in discernment. Why she has not offered a story like she has of the RMS seminarians, as of yet, is curious. If she has submitted one in the past, I stand corrected.

  8. I don't even bother reading that paper anymore. All they want to do is shove more neo baloney in your face. They want to use the Umatuna to recruit more members. The Umatuna is being used for the benefit of the "The Way" and only their way.
