We're waiting...for all of you!

  1. The archdiocese needs to take a strong stance against this and offer help and advice to all of us. how do i approach this with my child who was an altar server? what do i ask him? what if he is holding in this secret and also wants to kill himself? WHAT DO I DO??????????

    1. Don't expect the archdiocese to do anything. Look whose running it! Stay away from those evil monsters. The only possible helpful person at this point could be Deacon Steve Martinez - who spent years trying to address the deficiencies in Apuron's sex abuse policy and who was ultimately fired for trying to do so. I believe Deacon Steve will speak soon to your question. It's an important one.

  2. There we have it! Mr. Quintanilla stated that he told Fr. Jack Niland. Why didn't Archbishop's superiors at the time (Since he was a priest) do anything about this? This isn't good news for the franciscans as they are now to be implicated in this scandal. May the truth prevail!

    1. It’s an important question. At the time, Apuron’s superior was Fr. James Gavin. I understand he is still alive. I hope we hear from him. But also he was the responsibility of Archbishop Flores. We don’t know if Niland (he is deceased) told either of them. Maybe we will find out. BUT ONE THING FOR SURE is that Apuron should have RECUSED himself from being nominated as bishop. He didn’t.

    2. Fr. James was also considered for the episcopacy, Bishop Flores trusted and was personal friends with him as well. If Pope John Paul II didn't explicitly want a native Bishop, he would be shepherding us right now. He is a great priest and his name shouldn't be dragged in the mud with Apuron. He sacrificed so much to help the local Catholic Church grow, he left family and friends to help on Guam. And yes he is still alive, and just celebrated his anniversary, which was recently posted in the Umatuna.

    3. I'm afraid many names will be drug in. That's the nature of things like this. But bottom line is Apuron knew what he did and knew he was not fit to be a bishop, but did not recuse himself. In fact, I understand he politicked his way into it, capitalizing - as you say - on the penchant for "native" clergy to lead their churches.

As an aside, this experiment has failed horribly, not because the bishop "native", but for the same reason the church normally does NOT install bishops in their home dioceses elsewhere in the world.

    4. Who knew of this crime and was in a position to prevent Anthony Apuron from being on the episcopal short list in the early 80's but didn't? And why?

Poor Cordes surrounded by two abusers, one continued and arrogant sexual sinner and vow breaker, plus a "legal" facilitator and abettor of crimes.

Oh! but they have one thing in common. Guess what?

    1. Claros is Wrong, that we knew. He is also very incompetent, as it has been demonstrated. For sure, for sure.
But most of all he is dishonest.

    2. Claros is not qualified to oversee this investigation. He is only an a Payroll supervisor of Bank of Hawaii and have no back ground in any investigation work beside covering up for tony. Check his nose as he got it on tony.

    1. Say it in Tagalo. APURON is a Filipino as Martin Luther King is black and David Duke is white. APURON stop your denials. We see right through your devious eyes. Give the church back to the Chamorros and get all these foreign presbyteries out of Guam.

  9. Can we now get our local men to become priest? Or do we have to live with all these half baked presbyteries.

Look! Five smiling monkeys. Where are their hands? The look on Cardinal Cordes say that there is something going on with Brother Tony's left hand that he doesn't like.

Hmm. I wonder if they are all still smiling?

  12. Do not let apuron leave! That's the easy way out. Stay. Pay for your crimes to the Church and her children.

The neo leaders can leave. Go now. We won't protest you while you board that plane. You took all that you have already. Now leave. We'll fix our own Church!

  13. Apuron, EVERYONE (except your neo folks of course) is tired of listening to Uduvaldo and Gerraninni. We want to hear from YOU. Where the hell are you? They're not making you talk, not even the VG or Adrian! Only confirms that THEY have control of the chancery, not you. We don't want to listen to them. They're nothing to us. They're nobody to us. We want to hear from YOU! Not them!

  14. We are about to have a chance to showcase the island of Guam during FestPac Activities. Hosting our Pacific and Micronesian neighbors is a great privilege and responsibility. It seems, however, that as far as the local church is concerned, they are having a tumultuous FestF...d! How the church has come to this horrendous point was through a gradual erosion of stewardship, an arrogant negligence of leadership and wholesale abuse of the kindness of the local people.

    1. How the church has come to this point is because of what we have permitted. The other day a friend told me of something that had happened to him by a priest. It wasn't terrible but it was sexually suggestive. He was young. He told his grandfather and his grandfather called him (the boy) a dirty word and told him to never talk bad about a priest again.

    2. There have been many instances where this type of behavior in a Chamorro family have occurred. The family's reputation and honor is at stake, so the family member who is abused, is told to shut up and take it (the abuse). The shame and scandal that would come out of revealing an incident such as abuse, was more important than the victim. I have seen this in my own family and I refuse to sit back and let the guilty part get away with it. WE AS CHURCH, MUST STAND UP TO THESE TYPES OF ABUSES. NO MORE SITTING BACK AND WATCHING. EITHER BECOME PART OF THE SOLUTION OR REMAIN THE PROBLEM! We are to blame because from us, this bishop came.

    3. Dear Raymond,
this is unfortunately a sad part of the islands cultures. It is not endemic to Guam, I have seen it happen on several other islands.

That being said, this is exactly what child abusers of any walk of life are looking for:
      Easy access to Children.
Natural authority of an office or job position.
      A culture of shame.

I cannot tell you how much of an impact this has on the fact that many of our children are living these islands. There has never been any formal study on that particular subject.

I can only talk of my accidental experience with many of the Chamorros I met on the mainland.
For them, at one time or another they had been molested by a family member, a teacher or a priest.
I found it quite surprising, but soon found out, that many of these otherwise very nice persons had been sent away by their families, for their own protection (away from the perp) and for the preservation of the good name of the family.

This is why, it is fundamental that the abused's families, become supporting enough with their victims, so that they can move on with their lives and heal from the crime perpetrated against them.

Soon you shall see more victims, coming forward. Most of them will be people that have moved away.

Away from the shame, away from the chance meeting with their abuser, away from the difficult relation with their loved ones.
This issue leaves deep scars not only on the victims, but also on all the people that surround and love them.
It is essential that as a society we recognize the work that need to be done to right these wrongs and prevent them from reoccurring.

This is almost as catastrophic for the local population as the numerous abortions of Chamorro babies. The forced exile of the Children that were abused is not as tragic, but definitely catastrophic.

I pray, that as a society we find ways to heal and move forward to a better civil society and a better Catholic Church.

  15. Is apuron the only priest on Guam guilty of sexual abuse/molestation? Will other victims come out naming other priests? Or will guilty priests start announcing their plans to resign, retire, what have you before they become publicly called out and humiliated?

    2. So true Tim. If our heart is in the right place, we trust that the profound reason for our faith is in Jesus Christ, and not in his ministers who are themselves wounded healers and mere instruments of the all-encompassing love of God Divine. To hinge our church attendance or participation on human leadership (and inevitable weaknesses) is a blunt excuse to rationalize our failure to understand the life-giving relationship with God.

    3. Hello anon at 6.39, you do not need to justify why you are not going to Church. You made your choice, don't gloat.

I know that choice, I made it many years ago. Running away from the problem, does not fix it, plus it does not save your soul.
Think before you make a fool out of yourself.

  17. Yes there are other Priest as I was almost a victim. I was an altar server between the age of 14 thru 17. This priest passed away. So no need to bring up his name as he is now answering to God the almighty.
