Pale' Mike gives his honest appraisal of the situation of the Archdiocese of Agana.  What sayeth thee?

Does his assessment give you confidence moving forward?

  1. It was refreshing to hear Fr. Mike's comments. I wish more clergy would speak openly about issues facing the archdiocese. One would assume all are working in good faith to do the right thing. Why not let the people know what is going on and what is being done to fix the problems? Is there a gag order? Are we too fragile to handle the truth?

  2. I am so proud of Pale Mike! We were neighbors growing up in Barrigada and I moved away from the island before he grew up into adulthood. How awesome it was to find out when I came home one year to find out that he became a Priest! He is such a "People Person", just like his parents. God Has Blessed Our Village of Barrigada with having him as one of His Earthly Disciples! Thanking God that Pale Mike is now the Priest of the Toto Church which I now attend when I come home!

  3. What a breath of fresh air, Pale Mike. Now clergy, PLEASE open those windows wider! As difficult as it must be to be obedient, DO THE RIGHT THING. I'm hardly a major player but from where I stand I'm just seeing the walls of the church getting painted...with watercolor. Reassignments. (And for how long?) Committees. Will we even get to see findings?) Surveys. (What and WHO get to voice opinions?) Not sure how long we should have patience with AB Hon in fixing Apuron's mess? (I am still afraid that all we parishioners are doing is waiting for the watercolors to dry a bit...and watching apuron waltz in to resume his reign. Hon, apuron cannot ever be the spiritual leader of this archdiocese. Clergy, you know it too!

  6. Confidence? A little encouraging, BUT need to see more... and soon! More committees? More visits? Wait for Rome? WHEN is it that we get to see true repair? Until the TRUTH comes out the mess can't get fixed. Until then, I'll be joining the brave crowd that gets Sunday morning exercise from 9:00 - 9:45 a.m.

  7. Having no priest to check, console the victims from the start was very disappointing? They didn't give it a chance, and now the hill turns into a mountain. Anyhow what's done is already written, and I don't blame Tim at all for taking the exit door either.

    1. Monsignor James, Father Paul, and Deacon Stephen reached out to them. The only one that did it in the open was Deacon Martinez. Still they did reach out.

    3. I know people who did reach out to Roy, Doris, Walter and Roland and none of them were priests. I know people who did reach out to Roy, Doris, Walter and Roland when they were being viciously attacked by Apuron and his henchmen and none of them were priests. I even know people who reached out to Mons. James and Fr. Paul when they were being viciously attacked by Apuron and his henchmen and, once again, none were priests.

"Reach out" means what to you 9:13?

  8. Father Mike, your comments are indeed refreshing and comforting to know that there is a clergy who is there to buck the establishment and stand no mater the personal cost for the truth. Keep that voice crying in the wilderness loud and steady. You are after all standing in defense of the flock and for Mother Church. This is your solemn oath to God. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide your path.

  9. Someone needs to define "reach out." Did anyone offer the services of the church to them? Did anyone offer to put them in touch with professional help? And it appears from the interview that not even Fr. Mike even thought of asking Archbishop Hon to apologize to the victims for Apuron's attack on them. Apparently our priests think that showing up to stuff is reaching out.

Anonymous at 12:03 PM, you have brought up an excellent point on the term "reaching out" vs "showing up to stuff."

I know that, for me, "reaching out" to the victims would require Apostolic Administrator Hon to publicly communicate — verbally and in writing — something to the effect of "Public accusations about sexual abuse has been made against AB Apuron who has denied them publicly. While the Vatican is going through the process of investigating these allegations, we the Church on Guam are here to help Roy Quintanilla, Walter Denton, Roland Sondia and the mother of the late Sonny Quinata with the healing process." After such a statement, put action behind the words: Assign each victim an advocate to guide them in finding professional help.

However, the reality of the situation is that after the public accusations were made, Anthony Sablan Apuron — and his minions — responded not only by publicly denying the allegations but also calling the victims liars and threatening them (and others) with defamation lawsuits. Considering Apuron's narcissistic personality, there is no surprise that his response was all about HIM.

When Apostolic Administrator Hon came on the scene, during his first public appearance at SASVCC's 9 June "prayer meeting" he asked the congregation to pray for Apuron without mentioning the victims. Needless to say, there were people quite upset by that.
It took Hon 17 days before he issued his 26 June announcement that he was "earnestly praying for them WITHOUT PREJUDICE to both the alleged victims AND THE ACCUSED…"
Neither of the public statements made by Hon could be interpreted as "reaching out" to the victims.

As far as "showing up to stuff" I do commend Fathers Michael Crisostomo, Paul Gofigan, and Jeff San Nicolas, as well as Deacon Steve Martinez, for attending the funeral services of Sonny Quinata, presided over by Father Tom McGrath. It was commendable, it was "showing up," but it was not "reaching out."

I have heard that the local Church hierarchy refuses to issue an apology to the victims — and that priests, in turn, do not want to take a public stance in support of them — because to do so would be to "admit Apuron's guilt." Hence the statement suggested above since there is NO admission of guilt.

Inasmuch as Pope Francis directs that priority be given to allegations of sex abuse — "… priority must not be given to any other kind of concern" — and inasmuch as Anthony Sablan Apuron and minions publicly slandered and libelled the victims (which incidentally resulted in their filing a lawsuit), "reaching out" would, in my opinion, include a PUBLIC statement similar to the one I suggested above from Apostolic Administrator Hon which, in turn, could provide a model for our priests of how to truly "reach out" and not just "show up."
