THE NCW: AN INSIDER'S VIEW (From Bosnia and Croatia)

The cheap cowards over at The Diana title their blog "An Insider's View." However, there is a lot that they don't want you to see. We receive quite a few accounts like the one you are about to read. Most of what we are sent, we are asked not to publish, even anonymously, for fear that the account will be recognized by the sender's former community. It's hard for us on the outside to imagine what they could be so afraid of, but, nevertheless, their fears are real and some have suffered severe personal tragedy from the psychological harm endured while in the NCW and the fears they take with them when the try to leave. The sender of the following account agreed to have his account published, albeit anonymously.

FRUITS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT?

I am in contact with a man who needed counseling by the church following his exposure to the Neocatechumenal Way and a Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Bosnia and at another in Croatia. He was told by this church counsellor  that he had experienced verbal, emotional and spiritual abuse at their hands and having read his sworn statement I would add physical abuse to these.

All of his experiences were denied by the NCW national responsible team in the UK and, probably by the European coordinating rector at their London house of formation.

Many of the experiences were witnessed by his fellow seminarians at RMS Bosnia and at a RMS in Croatia and some have subsequently emailed him to establish  what exactly happened and to report that an itinerant catechist  from another country working in the seminary in Bosnia had been made the scapegoat for the events and had suffered some form of breakdown. His fellow seminarians at RMS Bosnia were concerned about the “bad mouthing” that was taking place after the man left the seminary and wanted to establish the truth for themselves.

It appears that many of the RMS rectors around the world originate from the mother house in Rome and adopt the same modus operandi.

In this man’s case the basic method employed was as follows;

ISOLATION. No mobile phones or internet contact was allowed. Personal phone calls to the seminary phone were discouraged and monitored.

PHYSICAL DURESS. 12 hours hard physical labour every day in cold dangerous conditions.

SLEEP DEPRIVATION.  Billeted in crowded dormitories and cramped cold conditions.

STARVATION RATIONS. This man lost 1/6 of his body weight over a 9 week period.

DESTRUCTION OF SELF ESTEEM. Constant denigration, humiliation and ridicule from the rector and dean.

REINFORCEMENT OF NCW. Banging on about being better formed than diocesan seminarians. Claiming to be the only ones in the church who know about  catechesis, evangelisation, family life etc.

NO PRAYER. This man was alarmed when told not to pray the Rosary or the Divine Office as he hadn’t reached the NCW stage of Initiation to Prayer.

RESTRICTED FREEDOM. Having become convinced that something was not as it should be and not of the Holy Spirit he asked to leave the seminary. His departure was frustrated by personnel in RMS in two countries and he was detained against his will. He was constantly verbally abused during this time. He had to make good his escape against the will of the seminaries.

DEMONIZED.  Upon his return to the UK his catechists made up all sorts of untrue stories to tell his old community why he had left.

These are not the fruits of the NCW that they would want publicized but they are what the Church and the public need to see so that appropriate action can be taken.

Unfortunately,Apuron did the same abuse in his forty years as a priest bishop. The same punishments are still taking place on Guam today. For this reason modern day human Rights abuses are happening Guam.

    2. If you are thinking of continuing in such a movement, think longer.

If you are Catholic, you should speak up for yourself, forthrightly. To God. To your bishop if he kindly asks AND IF he isn't out of turn (big if). No-one else and in no other circumstances. Whatever. And not what you were told to say either.

Your "guarantor" won't care for you. Your "responsible" won't care for you. Your "presbyter" won't care for you. Your "itinerants" won't care for you. Mr Gennarini won't care for you.

If all you want to trot out is the party line, bite your tongue and lose sleep for three years. Then tell the truth.

  9. I have been abused physically by a member of NCW and was prevented from talking about it but did manage to contact the police. I have never known of such a religious group where those in trouble needed to get help from solicitors to sort out the problem in question.

  11. and they don't allow seminarians to have any personal cash. the rector has to be asked for everything! One of these rectors was heard calling this man "son of a whore" in public. Perhaps he asked for some pocket money?

This maltreatment of NCW seminarians could be happening in the RMS in Yona. I recall Frenchie’s description of the RMS seminarians as described in his piece on the Liturgy for the Beginning of Abp Byrnes’ Episcopal Ministry (JungleWatch 12/1/2016). Frenchie’s description: “From the look of it, most of the poor young men, were disheveled, with hair unkempt, poorly groomed beards and in an obvious state of poor hygiene … this display of poor minds in poorly kept bodies, could not have been more striking.” Are the Guam RMS seminarians from other parts of the world? Meaning, they are not local? If yes, perhaps if they are experiencing some or all of the maltreatment listed in the story above, these seminarians don’t have anyone outside of the NCW to turn to for relief. Also, my understanding is that the Yona seminary is a gated compound. They can’t escape the compound much less escape from an island if they have no means of airline ticket, a safe sea vessel, and access to their passports and travel documentation to run away from the Guam RMS. Can the archdiocese check on this? The archdiocese’s Office of Vocations and Permanent Deaconate Formation would likely have standing to check on this situation, but I see it is headed by Presbyter Adrian --- who will likely attest that everything is going very well at the RMS in Yona.

I agree. On a basic level, no human being should be treated in the ways outlined in this story. In addition, this story is about events happening in a Catholic institution and we Catholics should not have these types of situations in our Church but, sadly these situations do exist. As to Guam, while we can't police the welfare of the RMS seminarians worldwide, the archdiocese has responsibility toward the welfare of the seminarians on Guam given that the seminary is of the archdiocese when Abp Byrnes cut the ties of the seminary from the NCW this past November. The Guam seminarians are technically the responsibility of the archdiocese and that includes their welfare and safety. While I’m concerned about the human injustice that may be present at the RMS Yona, I’m also concerned about criminal and/or civil liabilities to the archdiocese if any of the events above are happening in the RMS Yona.

Anon 7:06, I'm not familiar with Presbyter David-the-Lurch's formation background, but many comments in JungleWatch have made reference to his 8-year "study" (vacation, sabbatical ...) of canon law in Rome.

Here are a couple of comments from a JungleWatch storyline about the sham RMS 9/15/2016. A desire to leave the RMS Yona alludes to some of the same struggles in the storyline above. The author of the JW comment is Agnes: “I remember some years ago a seminarian successfully plotted and achieved his escape. I think his name was Daniel. He had his aunt wire him an airline ticket. The archbishop and the other seminarians scoured the island looking for him. Such an escape would be more difficult to actualize now”. A follow-up comment from Terlaje: “I remember Daniel. He was a very good looking young man with a heart for God but all he got was hell on earth on the island with this pop-up seminary. Even the NCW leadership were assisting with feeding the young ones to the wolf in sheep's clothing. I'm so glad that he was successful in leaving the island…”

    6. I hate the decades old fact of being lied too about our so called Yona diocesan seminary, if the rms curriculum is NOT within the standards for a Catholic Seminary, it NEEDS to be shut down...

With that being said, I would like to think that our new bishop, at a minimum would review the documentation required for any would-be seminarian, if NOT qualified, send him home...

As the diocesan bishop, it would be prudent to know his students, who will then become his future priest, these are the priest that would represent the Bishop upon their ordination...

    7. unlikely to be Rome if he took 8 years. maybe he was itinerant for a while as he was a little slow

    8. As mentioned above. Daniel on Guam had to get a ticket wired from his aunt. The man that was in bosnia and Croatia also needed family support to buy a plane ticket. But only because his family smelled a rat. As the seminarian wasn't allowed to use Internet or the phone! !! He was detained!!! He was told if you want to go get the money from England for your ticket and dismissed, but couldn't contact England. He struggled to get his passport back from them let alone a ticket.
NOW that's 2 people who had to plan an ESCAPE! !!!!!!!!. This man and this guy Daniel from Guam..
How many more??? What is really going on?? Rome is impressed by their swelling numbers of vocations.. To good to be true? This blog is reaching the 4 corners of the globe.. others will come out speak I believe. With harrowing stories... how many mens lives ruined will it take before this is stopped?

  14. The suggestion above that Coadjutor Archbishop Byrnes interview each seminarian privately is an outstanding one.

If he uncovers evidence of abuse, involuntary confinement, human trafficking, or similar, I prayerfully urge him to do the following:

Contact the FBI, USAO, or USDOJ Civil Rights Division, Criminal Section. The latter has done slavery prosecutions in the CNMI for women employed by night clubs.

Please, Your Excellency, do not allow any criminal goings-on at the RMS to be covered up or, worse, participate in that yourself.

We need a real shepherd, with the courage and strength to do what needs to be done.

Things in the Islas Marianas are not all as they appear.

    We are praying for you!

  15. Useful questions for research:

    1. How many "seminarians" have taken their own lives while at an RMS?

    2. How many priests/presbyters incardinated anywhere, whose training had been at an RMS, experienced objective neglect later in life if ill?

  18. Hi guys. Not sure which of you is writing. But this is Paul. Yes our Rector called me "A son of a whore" because I asked to leave. He did so on several occasions but including the time you mention. I was also told I would get cancer if I left.. I hope you guys are ok? Drop me an email or if you can have the courage to use your names on here. I understand you are scared.

  19. I was in Pauls old community. He was a good responsible. I witnessed alot of the trouble he had. I heard many phone calls where our Catacists told him to implement certain things. People were hostile to Paul and then the catacist said they didn't give Paul these instructions. When he returned from Croatia he was skinny, broken mentally and financially. The NCW did nothing to help him. He slept on friends sofas. I asked our Catacists "What are you doing about Paul Bright" they replied he's changed his tel number. He had not !! And they knew his father's address. Once they started giving me a hard time because I didn't do morning prayer every day. I heard the stories said about Paul. I heard the catacists deny things I heard them say and leave Paul high and dry. I decided to leave also.. Paul asked to meet his old catacists recently to hold peace talks. They didn't accept... So terribly sad. I would not let any friend or family member of mine anywhere near the NCW
