CATHOLIC ADULT STUDY GROUP - NO NEED TO BE CATHOLIC TO JOIN

This is something some of us have been doing since about 2005: meeting once a week for about an hour and engaging in a variety of studies from Apologetics to a read through of the Bible.

It's called a Catholic Adult Study Group because, in our opinion, while church leadership spends untold resources on our kids, their parents, Catholic adults, are mostly neglected...despite the fact that the constant mantra from the top is "faith begins at home." And then we wonder why the kids leave. SMH

Initially, we spent several years on apologetics, i.e. learning how to share the faith with others, both Catholic and non-Catholic.

Then we did a complete read through and study of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Currently we are doing a chronological read through of the Bible. This has proven to be especially challenging because not only are there many different versions of the Bible - even approved Catholic versions, some of those versions differ so radically that if you don't have the same version it's hard to know what the others are reading. However, we persist, and even the radically different versions of the same scripture give us cause for study.

After the Covid thing and we were no longer able to meet physically, some of us began meeting virtually. The virtual meeting had an added benefit. Per the "share screen" function, we could all read from the same version and we could collectively use helpful online commentaries.

While we have never put this out to the general public before, we are now. Feel free to join us per the following information. While we are using the Douay-Rheims version of the Bible (Challoner edition), you are welcome to follow along in whatever version you prefer to use and share how your version translates/interprets the same verse(s).

Oh, and no need to be Catholic to join.

Tonight (Monday, 6pm, Guam Time) we will be doing this:

and using this:

We will be meeting at 6pm at:

SAINT CARMEN OF THE NEOCATECHUMENATE, THE SUPREME.

Posted by LaPaz, Jungle Watch Correspondant from Spain.

"Carmen, a saint of a high top category", Kiko dixit.
Kiko always has/is/makes/needs the most, the best...or the worst, it depends on.

As if many people did not remember how Carmen used to behave in public, as if many of us did not know which kind of personality she had, Kiko has to paint a new background of his first candidate for sanctity, but in a very different way of previous saints in the history of Catholic Church. He has to be -as always- unique. And Carmen, of course, is going to be a revolutionary saint, nothing seen before.

A few time ago, Kiko has revealed Carmen talked in private to JesusChrist in a very loving language as her writtings show. It seems she kept her little sweetness for her diaries.

I am not here to judge Carmen's inner thoughts or wishes. She was on right to say, think and feel in privacy what she wanted, as any of us. But, wanted or not, she was a public figure for half and a million of neocatechumenals. Worth, she was a moral and spiritual guide for them, specially for neocatechumenal women if we believe Kiko's word.

Kiko told in front of millions of internet watchers during the last WYD in Poland that neocatechumenal women had seen how Carmen was absolutely free in her relationship with him, how Carmen was such a flag of truly neocatechumenal 'feminism' (saint feminism, of course). A strong woman who was not afraid to tell the truth to anybody, mean while in her lonelyness spoke to JesusChrist as her only love.

Here I will translate for you an anecdote which shows quite well what kind of character was Carmen in public. I hope if the Catholic Church needs to study in detail her figure this anecdote will help. Sadly, it is anonymous testimony appeared in a Facebook wall which has been published by Neocatecumenali's blog.

It took place in 2000, when the WYD in Israel with John Paul II. Neocatechumenal pilgrims were happy because the Pope was to visit them in the Mount of Beatitudes, exactly where the Domus Galilaeae is. This is the testimony of a young woman who assisted the Kiko's meeting which normaly closes every international pilgrimage for neocatechumenal people.

"The day grew gray, the sky stormed, but the hearts were still filled with expectations. I remember the Mount of Beatitudes packed with neocatechumenals waiting for the Holy Father. From where I was, I watched those colorful caps that distinguished the various communities, I felt the continuous sound, and I could discern a few neocatechumenal songs' notes from the sublime moment dictated by the wonderfully holy place.

I decided to run in the back, there was still much to wait, there Don Gianni contracted with some guy to get a colorful red cap, the yellow did not like him. Such an overhelming hilarity made me to sink into my thoughts.

I decided to stay away from any moral pollution and to take the best out of that event.

Soon after, I left the stage and the chaotic context. Suddenly and relentlessly, a voice began to give orders and to break that inner serenity that I had been able to conquer.

- Me: "What happens?"

- Carmen Hernández (originaly shouting in Spanish): "He creates problems! He does not listen to me! He is a disaster! A disaster!"

The truly disaster coincided with her altered nature.
Unconsciously I tried to catch, with my fingers under my T-shirt, the Rosary and the little medal of Virgin Mary given to me, a day before, by Father Norberth in the kibbutz.

Despite her agitation, she found enough time to concentrate on my actions, or maybe it was only the pretext which finished in her burst. At this point, a very heated, brief but intense conversation started. It made me exasperated! I refused her to be false in her catechesis.

I told her, in my frustration, to avoid mentioning the Virgin Mary because of her lack of respect and intolerance!

She asked me to stay in my (asigned) place.

- Carmen Hernández: "You do not understand anything, maybe you think we are here because we love ourselves, we are nobody, you are nobody, we are here, useless, insignificant, to thank God, take off of your arrogance, you do not have the gift of  obedience! Go! Go away! Ask God for forgiveness!"

I looked at her astonished, with my soul in state of agitation I told her, "I'm not insignificant, I am the daughter of God!" I started crying and went away before she could come again to persecute my choice of wearing those holy objects.

I remember with difficulty the remaining events of that day, my mind was exasperately focused on the tormented event that happened with Carmen.

I was surprised to notice her metamorphosis in the continuation of the day, exactly in the timidity of the events. I began to wonder if she was bipolar or if she was simply cunning and false. Prophets for the second ..... " (End).
Source: Translated from original in Italian, posted in Neocatecumenali.

Yes, that was Carmen, the upper saint. A woman full of rage, unpleasant, rude, ungobernable, stubborn like a mule in her relations with common people. But this anecdote shows something worst.
If she treated her supposedly "little brothers and sisters in faith" in such way, it is better not to know how bad she would be with her "equals" (if they existed, of course).

Not to talk about the "reason" Carmen found to humilliate that young woman: A pendant imagine of Virgin Mary and a Rosary around her neck, which she weared with devotion!

How can it be possible? It is NOT the first time at all I heard of Carmen's hate on those catholic sacramentals. Carmen hated all imaginery devotion. That is why is so strange what Kiko tells about her personal writtings, where she repeteatedly called JesusChrist as "Gesú". In the end, she was just acting in private in the opposite way she used to do publicly.

Because the laughing on the image of the Sacred Core of Jesus was such a must in their predication, the absurdity -for them- of many popular devotions, definetly, their identification of all those things with the hypocrisy of the christians of Sunday, natural religious people, etc.

Nothing more distant than Kiko and Carmen from the catholic devotion for the Virgin and the saints through lighting candles, praying novenas, attending processions and such. Very surprising.

Suddenly Carmen was able to tell neocatechumenal pilgrims a bible on the beauty of a romanic crucifix at the same time she was horrified by the Rosary attached at Kiko's belt. It was not just a personal opinion, not just a question of like. She hated those things. Can a truly saint hate Virgin Mary devotion?

Many people just think Carmen was a spoiled rich girl, many that she suffered some kind of mental illness (I agree), of course never diagnosed. Nor Kiko nor her could admit she had it, because all their catechesis about the origin of mental illness could have compromised both. They were always obsessed with the hidden sin under each depression, for example.

They have always denied the healing with psychiatrist and psychologyst's help. Only God was the salvation for those who suffered any mental disorder. Applying their own criteria, both must be hidden sinners without redemption, because their respective strange behavioural symptoms were there, in front of our noses. Maybe Carmen was bipolar, maybe borderline, who knows? The only thing I am sure she was not 'normal' at all.

For those who think I am exagerating, please read some commentaries posted by former members about the related anecdote in Neocatecumenali:

Somebody who signs as @ex-fratello (former brother) says: "In a nutshell, the true purpose of these two impostors: to humiliate, to denigrate, to undo the dignity of every human being to make them puppets in their hands ("you do not have the gift of obedience!"), the Devil disguised as a lamb!
It is true that Carmen is a top class saint, but of the demon's army!

Catechumens who are still into the Way and have doubts, run out, free yourself from this sect, open your mind, analyze what you say and do and you will realize that you are all speaking the same words, doing the same reasoning and worse, accusing yourself of being wrong when you make a mistake and losing the path of God, the true merciful. I still have troubles believing that God loves me as I am and I still have so many false guilty feelings that have been overwhelmed by 20 years into the NCW! Even though in good faith you believe that the NCW is not perfect and you justify it because it is done by men, you are silent about your conscience who is telling you to go out because it is not a question of human limits but brainwashing studied and calculated by these two impostors."

@Valentina Giusti posted: St. Louis de Grignion in the "Treatise of True Devotion to Mary" had very well identified the type of "devotee" to which Carmen belonged, defining it as one of the seven false devotions to the Virgin inspired by the Devil.
This is the devout "critic": below the description he did.

Critical devotees are usually proud intellectuals, strong and presumptuous spirits, who have a certain devotion to the Blessed Virgin, but who criticize almost all of its practices that simple people simply and holyly address to this good Mother. They criticize them because such practices are not of their taste; Call into question all the miracles and stories brought by authors who are worthy of faith, or drawn from the chronicles of religious orders, which testify to the mercy and power of the Blessed Virgin; They look with discomfort for simple and humble people kneeling in front of an altar, or a picture of the Virgin, sometimes in a corner of the street, to pray to God; And accuse them of idolatry, as if they worshiped wood or stone; They say that - as far as they are concerned - they do not like these external devotions and are not so weak in spirit to add to the faith all those stories and stories about the Holy Virgin. When the wonderful praises that the Holy Fathers tribute to the Blessed Virgin are then told, they respond by saying that they have spoken by speakers, exaggerating, or giving them an altered explanation. This kind of false devotees and proud and humble people is very much to be feared; They make a huge mistake to the Blessed Virgin and manage to divert the people, with the pretext of extirpating abuses".

Among many others extraordinary comments in Neocatecumenalis, just mention one very valuable which I hope Diana and Guam neocatechumenal's could read someday. An Spanish man, called Jose Antonio, says:

"We were raised as a family on mission and we went to the covivence of sending to Porto San Giorgio in October of the year 2000. It coincided with the Jubilee of the Families and there were in Rome representatives of several movements. Carmen Hernández criticized Chiara Lubich. She messed with her hair (I think she was envious because she was a very elegant woman) but the worst thing is that she got into her charisma. She said who was going to believe that woman to accompany Christ abandoned.
I believe that the process to canonize Carmen will never begin, but if it were so I would testify on the Sacred Scriptures that what I say is true.
Many greetings from Santiago de Compostela".

That is the point. Kiko and Carmen always ridiculizing the rest of (non-neocatechumenal) catholics. No matter if you were a founder or a simple family man. If you are not in the NCW, your faith is just ridiculous. I am glad some former members can remain Carmen's words in front of hundreds and thousands of neocatechumenals, until the point of offering to testify in front of an ecclesiastical court if needed. Bravo!

@Tripudio, one of Neocatecumenali's editors, says: "True objections concern the spiritual life of Carmen, like anyone else, Christian virtues, attitudes about the truths of faith and the sacraments: it may happen that somebody faithfully lives poverty, chastity and obedience, and then teaches some wrong doctrine Or live in a superficial way (if not a bit hostile) sacraments. The great heretics of the past were all so, for most of the ascetic specimens (remember, for example, Pelagio, càtari, Giansenio ...) and at the same time cheating on the truths of faith.

Christianity, in fact, is not a list of moral rules. Christian morality is the result, not the premise of faith. When the wealthy young man explains to Jesus that he has an excellent moral life, Jesus responds to something that obfuscates him. That is, the fact that to consecrate to the Lord does not suffice an impeccable moral life. The tension towards Christian virtues is a result of the life of faith, for the Christian understands that sins are at least an obstacle to union with God.

Even on the NCW, as in all other ecclesial groups, making canonization of its founders is the most comfortable from all points of view: that of ecclesial marketing, that of member identity, that of self-justification of the capibastone (mafia boss), that of the "original charism to be rediscovered "when there is nothing to say, that of silencing those who raise well-founded criticism, and so on.

Unfortunately, John Paul II has left us an annoying legacy: in the very good intent of unlocking canonization causes that had long been devastated (and without him they would remain firm in the archives for who knows how many other years), he left a bit too free to what they call in jargon "the factory of the saints". Today, unfortunately, it is no longer taught that the levels of holiness of souls can be varied - and for example, to recall the charism of a Saint Francis, which spans eight centuries over the charism of a saint founder of a small institute, venerated practically only by those who directly have known him.

The Summits of the Way -Kiko in the head, who, five years ago, was distributing his sanctity- have everything to earn to make the "saint (Carmen)" who personally have verified to have been an arrogant person, exhausted by the power she had longed for since he was a disgruntled nun in Madrid's shacks, and above all a teacher, a shameless, ambiguous, fundamentally heretical doctrine, never recognizing her own mad mistakes, always considering her "inspirations" (by the Devil) most important elucubrations of the Church's doctrine. Considering her as infallible by stirring up an ecclesial recognition means bringing innumerable souls to ruin (in addition to what the Way has already damed)".

CAN YOU SMELL THE LOVE?

(Posted by Glaucon Jr)

Ever since I began writing posts dealing with the Neocatechumenal Way, I have in faith and in charity been compelling to become immersed in their theology. I knew there was grave error present if only from the de facto liturgical schism on Guam as well as the shockingly prideful statements of the superiority of NCW member faith over “traditional Catholics” whom they regard as quasi-Catholics, half-pagan and wholly immature in everything Christ.

So we had to get into the nitty-gritty, and man, this is nasty, pungent stuff!

A WORK OF MERCY: INSTRUCT THE IGNORANT, EVEN WHEN IS A BRAVE NEOCATECHUMENAL

Posted by LaPaz, Jungle Watch correspondent from Spain.

"La ignorancia es atrevida", we say in Spanish to mean only the ignorant dare to mess up giving lessons to others. Neocatechumenals are very ignorant and then very brave in their ignorance.

I am convinced the Neocatechumenal Way is the charism to model perfect brave ignorant people.  In that sense, Opus Dei is the opposite example of well formed people in catholic Church Teachings and Doctrine, so they use to aspire to vanguard positions everywhere. Neocatechumenals are called to be the large populate on streets, those who are carried here and there to clap, sing and dance.

A VERY SECRET FRUIT OF THE NEOCATECHUMENAL WAY...

Posted by LaPaz, Jungle Watch correspondent from Spain.

I like reading about life of saints, their visions and supranatural gifts. Spain has been touched by a special Grace being a land of great saints and founders. Spain is called "land of Mary", as reminded by Pope John Paul II. Even when many people confess being not "practitioners" of catholic faith, among Spanish does exist, traditionally, a deep love for Virgin Mary in her very different advocacies.

Of course, for Kiko and Carmen that kind of loving for Virgin Mary as a cultural value is a complete stupid thing, related with natural religiosity and supersticion. Surely for them is an expression of infantilism in faith.

NEOCATECHUMENAL MESS ABOUT SIGNS AND HOLINESS.

Posted by LaPaz, Jungle Watch correspondent from Spain.

Kiko and Carmen lashed out "sacramentalism" of catholic Church during centuries with the excuse of the renewal of Council Vatican II.

They have always sold that the Neocatechumenal Way was inspired directly by God to realize CVII. They are convinced the NCW has to guide the whole Church into a new theology, a new faith, for a new evangelization for the Tertio Millenio which has just come.

Kiko and Carmen did not propose only a new method, but THE only. They feel the Way is exactly what catholic Church needs to survive for this new human era. The most surprising thing is they are just doing the same "wrong" things they criticized.

HOLINESS AND THE TRADITION

(Posted by Glaucon Jr)

(A Monstrance: This is God, not a menorah)

We who write for and read JungleWatch  stand firm in our commitment to rid the poor, suffering Church of the greatest abuses by whatever means are legally and morally available to us. But no matter what anyone says, the removal of the errors and corruptions of the Catholic Faith by the NCW is not and cannot be the end-game. The removal of NCW as the dominating force in the Church on Guam is really just the end of the storm. But how will we start again to rebuild after such a long tempest?

Since we flatly reject the NCW vision of spiritual bondage, we must make clear for everyone the alternative in this war for the salvation of souls. The answer is found in the Tradition of the Faith. How this is done is where discernment is called for. But we do know what the key is: holiness.

IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE SOME THINGS THEN YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO CHANGE "SOME THINGS"

As a bit of a prologue to the post below, KIKO'S VIRGINS, by Chuck White, I'd like to add a few comments.

Kiko's bastardization of Scripture and indeed the whole of the Christian faith, is only possible because most Catholics simply have no catechetical center of reference. And the fact that Kiko has had such an easy time of spreading his heresy in Guam is not just an indictment on a corrupt bishop and a few fools, but a scorecard on the miserable state of real CATHOLIC catechesis in this diocese for many years.

Case in point. The Neo's essentially hold a weekly study of Scripture wherein they are indoctrinated with Kiko's interpretations of it. While we may be horrified by what is taught, where else in this diocese do Catholics have access to a weekly study of Scripture? And led by someone solid in the Church's (NOT HIS OWN) understanding of it?

I inserted "NOT HIS OWN" for a very important reason. For it is not necessary to a attend a neo-cult event to hear Scripture twisted. I sometimes wonder if some of our non-neo priests, the ones we are depending on to lead us out of this wilderness and back to sanity when the dust settles, don't spend more time reading pop theology than studying Scripture in light of the "Fathers" (as Chuck illustrates) and the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

I suppose this little entry will make me a few more enemies (get in line), but the sad fact is that there was already a mass exodus from the Catholic Church of Guam long before the NCW became a central problem. In fact, we can be sure that there are still more Catholics leaving for other "churches" (or no church at all), than are leaving for the NCW.

(Some will blame "the times" or "secularization," but that doesn't explain why other "churches" are bursting at the seams with ex-Catholics - and some of those churches are far more demanding than anything these ex-Catholics grew up with.)

The problem isn't only with our clerical leadership. Several years ago as my kids began becoming old enough to go to school, I visited a few Catholic schools and asked to see their religion texts. Most of those texts avoided the word "Catholic" in favor of "God's people." I won't get into the full issue now, but is it any wonder why our sons and daughters who are immersed in the idea of "God's people" vs the Catholic Church, eventually believe all religions are the same and there's no reason in particular to remain Catholic?

A few years ago I was part of a plan to remedy this problem. A catechetical series was introduced into grades 1-8 which put the emphasis back on a Catholic identity and solid Catholic catechesis. The series was the only catechetical series that had been immediately approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops while all others had to be returned for revisions. I understand that in several schools the series was soon abandoned because "it was too hard."

Another case in point. While running a book store for several years I often had Catholic customers asking for a "Children's bible," a bible children could "understand." I had to explain to them that there are no "children's bibles." There are only books with bible stories and then there are bibles. I would show them the "bibles" and they would walk away.

Meanwhile, the kids over at the other "Christian" schools begin first grade with a full-fledged version of the King James Bible and are tasked with immediately memorizing large portions of it. Apparently a real bible is too hard for Catholic kids.

I don't know about you but "hard" is seeing your child leave the Catholic faith whether it be for another faith or no faith at all - particularly if you've spent years of tuition money to give your child what you thought was a "Catholic education."

Yes, Kiko is a freak. But he is also a smart man. He saw the soft under-belly of 40 years of a "God-loves-you" only catechesis. He saw the timidity of pastors to teach the hard truths of the Catholic faith. He saw the rudderless religion of an entire generation of Catholics for whom a real Catechism and a real Bible were "too hard." And he saw his opportunity. He took it. It was easy. It was easy because our lamps had long since run out of oil when we surrendered ourselves and our children to the system of "easy."

I think you know how to fight back, and it is not just with protests and signs, or even with just prayer. If you want to change some things, then you are going to need to "change some things."

P.S. Perhaps today's Epistle, Isaiah 11:1-5, (Extraordinary Form) can serve as a reminder of how God himself teaches...and how we once did as well: "He shall strike the ruthless with the rod of His mouth, and with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked."

JRSA ANSWERS THE ZOLTAN

Actually, Joe San Agustin's comments were not posted in response to The Zoltan's usual delusions which he posted to Tom Tanaka's letter in the PDN yesterday, but Joe's comments are timely and instructive. Read The Zoltan's laughable response and then Joe's schooling of the likes of The Zoltan after that.

REPLYING TO COMMENTS

The PDN poll has left us with a wealth of data. I say "data" and not just "comments" because the context of the comments, the poll, affords us the opportunity to look at the comments as data - a true study of the deformation of consciences and minds by Kiko's theology. Let's start with this one:

  • J. Bautista - yesterday
PDN asked to rate our confidence in the Arch Bishop but we are mistaken if we assume the position is to filled by popular vote. It was by popular vote that Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross; crucified. Let us also not forget that it is Jesus Christ who is the head; the leader of his Church that we should be following.
I have little confidence in any man but ask me if I have faith in Arch Bishop Apuron and I will tell you YES. We may not like or accept the message God sends through his servant the Arch Bishop Anthony Apuron but that is our problem.

**********

So J. Bautista, you would rather have faith in Apuron than "any man". Well there's your first problem - apparently thinking that Apuron is more than a man.

J. Bautista, some news for you:

Bad bishops started with Judas, and since then there have been an untold number of Judases who have held the office of "bishop" - prompting one of the Church Fathers to comment as early as the 4th century that the "floor of hell was paved with the skulls of bishops."

In the same century, St. Jerome, the translator of the only version of the Bible the Catholic Church still holds to be without error, wrote "the whole world groaned to find itself Arian". This sad comment was prompted by the  defeat of "trinitarianism" at the Council of Ariminum where most of the world's bishops opposed the essential Christian doctrine of three persons in one God...as Kiko cleverly does.

Kiko's Arian heresy was manifestly documented by a Kiko priest actually teaching our deacon candidates that Jesus Christ was a sinner and that he too "experienced the forgiveness of the Father", just like us. This is the belief that Apuron - and apparently you - uphold: JESUS CHRIST IS A SINNER. That's some serious crap, J. Bautista.

More news for you J. Bautista:

In January of 2006, your beloved Apuron publicly and brazenly rejected the authority of Pope Benedict on KOLG by rejecting a very clear directive from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments. Apuron has since refused to obey the same directive he was given then. You can read about it here and actually listen to him say it. He has never apologized, and in fact, recruited me and several others to lie for him to cover this up.

Feel free to follow your beloved Apuron, J. Bautista. For my part, I  refuse to live a lie or follow a liar.

THE ZOFFOLI REPORT

Part of the reason I made posts about the Legionnaires of Christ scandal and the horrible consequences of Arianism was to give some background as to how the Church has had to deal with the "smoke of Satan" in the Church, even at the "highest levels" (as Paul VI said) throughout its history and to show that the problems with Kiko Arguello and the protection he has at "the highest levels" is nothing new.

Twenty years ago the problems posed by the errors of Kiko Arguello were thoroughly pointed out to Vatican authorities by the eminent Italian scholar, Fr. Enrico Zoffoli. At the time, the Vatican (Cardinal Ruini) replied with an admonition to Zoffoli not to make premature judgments on topics that are reserved to "competent bodies" (meaning the Roman Curia).

Zoffoli's reply to Rome is an example for us today. He replied that he was not presuming to act in the place of "competent bodies" but that (as a Catholic and a priest) he had the "right and duty to act in this way" because of observable errors and especially since it appeared that the "competent bodies" did NOT have access to all the facts, namely Kiko's catechism ("secret texts").

AN ALL SOUL'S DAY OPPORTUNITY

By coincidence, regular Catholic basher, Diane Iglesias, just happens to have another "Catholic basher" letter in today's PDN, timed perfectly to bash the scripture upon which the Catholic Church bases its practice of praying for the dead on the very day when the Catholic Church specifically prays for the dead.

How about that?

That's even better timing than the PDN's coincidental timing of the printing of the David Mills letter bashing Joseph Lastimoza with the PDN's headline story bashing Joseph Lastimoza.

Every year at this time I anticipate the usual bashing of the Catholic practice of praying for the dead, and, once again, this year, thanks to Diane Iglesias and the keen editorial timing of the PDN, I was not disappointed. (In fact, I should have put money on it!)

DIACONATE CANDIDATES TAUGHT: JESUS CHRIST "BECAME A SINNER."

9/26/14: We have identified the SPEAKER as Fr. Angelo Veraldi, from Italy, and we have been informed that he is or has been also instructing the seminarians at RMS.

The following is a transcript of this recording. It is a recording of a presentation by someone instructing the current candidates for the permanent diaconate for our Archdiocese. We are not sure if this is a member or the clergy or a layman. We ARE sure that he is not from here and we are working to identify him. You will note the extreme difficulty in understanding right from the beginning (poor candidates), but it gets worse.

9/25 Note: There were several comments questioning why those who were present did not challenge the speaker. We don't know that they didn't since we don't have a recording of the whole session. We do know that they didn't challenge at the moment that it was said, but that is not something to be alarmed at. I had to study the recording several times to be sure that the speaker really did say what he said and that he meant it in the way he said it. We are thankful for whoever recorded this. We realize the fear that almost anyone who is not neo and a is a member of the clergy or who aspires to be must deal with. Therefore I have decided not to entertain any comments calling into question the lack of a response from the candidates.

THE NEOCATECHUMENAL WAY - A FEARFUL DANGER TO THE FAITH

While this was written in 1995 before the approval of the Statute in 2008, we have no evidence that the teaching of the Way has changed after the many years of scrutiny and corrections by the Vatican. We also have no evidence that the NCW even conforms to to its own Statute. In fact, we have every evidence to the contrary. Thus, what was written in April 1995 by the eminent scholar Fr. Enrico Zoffoli, still stands when compared with what we see, even today.

"DEAR DIANE": A RESPONSE TO THE ACCUSATION OF IDOLATRY

In the Opinion section of today's edition of the Pacific Daily News, a reader named Diane opines against the Catholic Church, accusing us of idolatry, etc. You can read her letter here (it's the second letter).

This is a very common accusation and it would do Catholics well to not use anecdotes about pictures of your kids or some such metaphor in trying to explain why we honor and pray to Mary and the saints, but to use scripture to provide the basis for our practices. Following is my response posted in the comments section.

*****

Dear Diane,

Thank you for the opportunity to engage this topic. A few things.

First, the bible does not number the commandments. In fact, within what we call the 10 Commandments, there are actually 13 or even 14 different directives. Different religions have grouped these directives differently. What you label the second commandment is part of the first commandment in the Catholic ordering.

Second, if we are to take your interpretation of the passage, we would have to say that God violated his own commandment only a few chapters later in Exodus 25 when he commands the Israelites to make two statues, and not only make two statues, but place them upon the the holiest of all things, the Ark:

“Make two cherubim of beaten gold for the two ends of the cover; make one cherub at one end, and the other at the other end, of one piece with the cover, at each end. The cherubim shall have their wings spread out above, sheltering the cover with them; they shall face each other, with their faces looking toward the cover.” (Ex. 25:18-20)

And again, later in Numbers 21:8, God apparently disobeys his own commandment - as per your interpretation - when he orders Moses to:

“Make a seraph and mount it on a pole, and everyone who has been bitten will look at it and recover.”

It’s interesting here, that not only does God command Moses to make a “graven image” - apparently forbidden by your interpretation of Exodus 20:4-5 - but then commands that people (bitten by snakes) should “look at it” and “recover”.

Either your understanding is incorrect or God is very confused. However, I know that it is not “your understanding”. It’s what you’ve been taught, like so many others. But going on.

You say that the Vatican asserts that Mary is the “co-redemptrix”. Actually, the Vatican has not approved “co-redemptrix” as an official title for Mary. However, if it does at some point it would be no big deal. All Christians are to be CO - operators, CO - redeemers, in the sense that we are called to carry on the redemptive work of Christ.

Mary’s role in bringing the Good News to the world is just a bit more special than the rest of us since God chose to be enfleshed through her.

One final note is your confusion over the word “pray” which you take to mean “worship”. “Pray” means to “ask”. And Catholics ask Mary to pray for them: “pray for us now and at the hour of our death”. We ask her and the other saints (see the “cloud of witnesses” in Heb. 12:1) to pray for us in the same way I can ask you to pray for me. It’s just that, Mary’s prayers and the prayers of the saints are ever more powerful since as James tells us “the prayers of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16).

This verse implies that the more righteous one is the more one’s prayers will “availeth”. Nothing new there. We find the quality of petition and sacrifice dependent on the righteousness of the offerer throughout the Bible.

Thus Catholics - and others who believe in the communion of the saints - do not limit their request for prayers to the dwellers of earth but include in their prayer circle the dwellers of heaven - where in Revelation we see them praying for us (Rev 5:8).

There is much more, so if you would really care to know the truth of the Catholic Faith, join us on Monday nights at the Cathedral bookstore at 6pm for our study session. We would be glad to have you or anyone else with questions.
